105 vs Ultegra

Christ.

If I’m lining up in any cycling-only race, something very wrong has happened.
:+1::+1::+1:

And what’s this… summer and winter bikes?
I thought we all retired to the garage from October?

On a serious point, though, I really didn’t get on with my TT bike (first ride swerved to miss a pothole, came off at about 6mph and broke my elbow). I know it was all psychosomatic but it was a huge mental barrier of unstable carbon, so recently sold it.

The way I look at it, I barely tolerate cycling. So, if I have to do it, I want to be comfortable and feel safe: my 15 year old roadie always gave me that feeling.

Sod that!
I like riding outdoors, just so long as I’m appropriately attired.

Consensus seems to be;
105 and Ultegra are both pretty damn good
Newer is better
Ultegra for POSH
105 for not-so posh

Dura Ace is the reserve of dentists and The C-Suite

ETA: bloody hell!
I love being outside on my bike, just not cleaning it or maintaining it (even though I lovingly do)
Good kit and a good steed will make you feel better about it :+1:t3:
Although, saying that, my old PX SL Pro Carbon (I’ve had four of the things) was mint! Bought a size too small on purpose and just loved the way you could throw it through corners, it felt so nimble.
I adore a massive seatpost and no spacers and a massive stem :see_no_evil:

Thanks @Poet, and all other contributors. As always, fully respect your informed opinions!

Not sure how else I can repay the favour, but will keep trying (you all love my daily training updates and smutty Innuendos , right)?

I’m a tart for smutty innuendos

I don’t mind innuendo but find them hard to shoe horn in.

I’m sure GCN did a blindfold test ( on a turbo) between DA and R7000 105. Presenters could tell the difference. :man_shrugging:

That’s two steps up - can you tell the difference between 105 vs Ultegra and Ultegra vs DA?

Yeah exactly. 2 steps up. On the R7000, Shimano usedthe same derailleur mechanism as DA, so GCN we’re saying there’s now no reason to go any higher than 105, unless you simply want to.
I’ve only ever used 105 so can’t comment.

But they could tell? Blindfolded?

Which comes back to what Matt said about cables.

i think it was a typo?

Do the DA cables still have that furry crap inside them? That seemed to cause more issue than it fixed.

Likely stupid question, having never done my own re-cabling … I’m assuming no difference between different “speed” groupsets? Cables are uniform between 11 and 10 sp?

Yes, 10 and 11 speed are the same

Thanks.
Any diff between these two?

Coding for the outer appears different, but both dura ace? And both the same RRP and pricing (unless you want red, in which case £15 off). This is where manufacturer SKU’s gets really confusing

No fury crap: the cables have a PTFE nylon coating, which really helps to keep the friction down on tight bends. Since a lot of modern bikes have quite complex cable routing (Shiv was a nightmare) it does make a difference. However, on a bike with a straight forward rounting makes less difference

That’s the stuff I’m referring to. Loads of issues in Oz with them gunging up, hopefully they’ve gotten better in that last few years.

Sorry yeah typo earlier. GCN presenters could not tell the difference between DA and R7000 in a blindfolded test.
