Aero on a budget

Where @Jgav, where?

Corsham near Bath

Sorry, no where near me

Day trip wiv da kids :see_no_evil:
We did that when I picked up my TT bike.
Nobody did a :poop: on the driveway either

Isn’t @buzz out Chippenham way?

'Fraid not, about an hour away.

So, I’ve been looking for some 303/404 FCs for ages and can never find any at a price I’m willing to pay (<£900)

(Rim brake, clincher - I sold my tubular ones, as I was
Only using them on the road bike and punctures were annoying me)

Anyhow, I remember @leahnp and @Matthew_Spooner mentioned the Wiggle Prime 50mm wheelset as decent.
They’re now under £500 and look like the stickers are easy to remove.

Thoughts?

They are a good wheel set for the price. I know a quite a few who ride them and have used them
In the past. They ride very similar to the Mavics. I checked the Wiggle eBay site and nothing in there at the moment but the last set of 50s went for £200

Solid set of wheels for the £, teamed up with some GP5000s and roll very nicely

They’re £475 new, so half what I was looking at spending.

The reviews seems to mention a heavily greased rear hub causes sticking and the front wheel creaks when climbing.

Have you or @symes had issues with that?

I’ve got some nice Mavic Ksyrium Pro UST on at the minute :+1:t3:
I like how they roll, but miss the noise of the Zipps :see_no_evil::rofl:

No issues here at all, only done c.800km on them though, can’t remember if there’s a decent sound when up to speed :frowning:

Nice. That’s about five rides for me in summer :see_no_evil::rofl:

Hmm…cheers for the input.
Seems like a good goer really.

I did feel odd with wheels worth as much as my bike before :see_no_evil::rofl:

The early Prime wheels needed the spokes tensioning after a few rides but for the price they are great.

Yup, about that for me, maybe split over 7 or 8 but with nowhere to race it all seemed a bit pointless taking them out so left the heavy wheels on for the majority of the time

I had a look at the prime wheels but they’re too wide for my olde worlde bike. Look good value though.

Sorta related: last week I ordered a pair of those wheelbuilder hand built NSW copies on Hope hubs. Think I posted a link to them in another thread a while back. Twice the price of the Primes c£1k with the expensive hubs.

I have an older set of Zipp FCs that I’ve done some good mileage on. They were eBay £800 jobs. They’re still true. But I’ve had 3 spoke nipples fail in the last 2 years. Alloy nips with no signs of corrosion so it must be fatigue. Given a choice I’d take brass nipples. I can’t trust the Zipps now as they could go “twang” whilst riding at any time. Need a full rebuild with new nips. I might do a wheel building course this year and DIY it.

Then you can become the TT defacto wheel builder, offering GREAT RATES.

The old zipps did go through a series of recalls due to hubs and spoke issues.

Yeah mine are the recalled hubs. 188s or something. I just keep a close eye on them. I tried to contact my local Zipp dealer that Zipp suggested and wasted 10 mins of my life trying to explain the difference between a manufacturer recall and a warranty claim. It was like trying to explain geophysics to a gerbil.

Prime black edition, paid £600. Great set of wheels with really nice brake track for rim brakes… probably the best carbon rims i ownes in terms of braking performance in wet, good weight stiffness balance too
