All things Turbo

Yeah i definitely miss that aspect of it. Like i can climb the Alpe by just putting a film on in the background and just pedalling away at my own pace, all content. Which i guess takes a bit (lot) away from the whole challenge. But there’s not much i can do about that unless i win that TDF competition and get the Wahoo!

I’m on a dumb trainer Tacx Flow with Garmin power pedals. It’s OK, in an ideal world I’d have a smart trainer but in an ideal world my roof wouldn’t leak either.

Any fellow flat dwellers here? What trainer do you use?

I’ve been using an Elite Muin for the past 2 years (which I got for £50 from cycling team that was disbanding :scream:) It is amazingly quiet. Sound meter app on my phone says 55db at 200w (however accurate that is).

However I have a dilemma - I currently live in a ground floor flat so never really worried about noise but I’m soon to be moving to a fourth floor. So I’m starting to wonder about noise/vibrations. Everything you read online says the Tacx Neo is the quietest but I’m not super keen on dropping 1k if it’s not a huge difference to the Muin (in terms of quietness)

I’ve got a saris h3 and we’ll impressed with how quiet that is.
Under 750 at wiggle with loyalty discount.

I posted a while ago that I had been given a Technogym turbo which somehow retails at about £1500.
Well it turns out the Bluetooth is not working and it needs a new CPU board.

I’ve spoken to them and as it is out of warranty they want $491.19 for the part then an additional fee to send an engineer out :joy:

So that’s that.

I was also got an out of warranty Wahoo Kickr a few months ago that blew up the first time I plugged it in. No proof of purchase so no help from Wahoo.

FML.

I think you need a new dealer mate. Try the other street corner

My Tacx Flow competes for noisiest household appliance with the hoover, the blender and the washing machine on spin-dry.

Don’t get one of those

Bet my toddler is louder than all of those, combined! :joy: That girl has volume! (which she decided to use at 3.45, 5.30 and 6.30 today the little bugger)

How old is the building?
New build, concrete floors, I think you’d be fine.
Used to be a house, converted into flats the Vibration may well be an issue.
Before trying out a new turbo I’d try something to isolate it from the floor, I imagine something like the rocker plate (https://www.wiggle.co.uk/lifeline-rocker-plate) would help.

But note… a lot of the above is guessing, it might not help at all!

They have both come 2nd hand from TeamSKY/Ineos!

Its a new build, so hopefully you’re right! I’ve got one of them rubber mats that you put under washing machines - so I’ll give that a go for vibrations too.

I know, right!

Wanna hear something funnier?

When I knew I was getting the Kickr, I gave my Tacx dumb trainer that I’d never had any issue with to somebody who was just getting into cycling with his son. A guy I don’t even really know.
Now he has a turbo and I don’t. Well I actually have an Elite Muin I’ve been using that belongs to a friend but he needs it back :see_no_evil:

Two x dumb trainers

Both work perfect…!

One has all kinds of features I never use, you can borrow one for the winter if you like?

Computrainer which I have had for 10 years - works without any complaint on old cheapo laptop.

Noisy as hell though

Yep, my Tacx Satori from 2007 is still going. Bit rusty on the lags now though, and also very loud.

I may take you up on that. I’m going to speak to Steve 1st and see when he needs this Muin back.

It’s only a basic wheel on…

Digital elite?!

In the market for a new turbo. No need to be smart, I don’t use zwift and have a powermeter on bike. Priorities are

  • higher resistance: on my current magnetic one I need to go over 100rpm to hit 380W
  • quiet as possible: I live in an apartment
  • value for money.

Happy to pay £250 for the Saris fluid, or £300 for the Kurt kinetic road machine. Having trawled through online reviews and the 4 turbo threads on here they seem popular and well reviewed. But is there any reason not to just get the Lifeline TT2 for £75? Can’t really find many reviews for it although the ones there seem positive enough at its RRP of £150.

Happy py for suggestions if there’s any I’ve missed in that range.

I’ve got both a KK Road Machine & an older Cycleops (Saris) Fluid & they are both rock solid.

Have you looked at the Wiggle eBay site? There are none on there at the moment, but I was following a KK Rock & Roll recently which went for £180.
