Important Notice
St Albans District Highways Department has formally written to the club referring us to new regulations on cycle tyre pressure that have today been introduced locally ahead of national rollout. The important bits are as follows:
“Recent research shows that a disproportionate amount of road damage is caused by pedal cycles with high pressure tyres. This is because the incident pressure on a very small amount of road surface can be up to 50 times the typical car tyre. This causes micro-damage that can spread quickly and is why there are many more potholes on the sides of the road where pedal cyclists predominate.
“To address this problem, we have introduced a new requirement that pedal cycle tyre pressures must not exceed 2.7 bar, the same as a large SUV such as a Range Rover or Mercedes GLS. That is 2.7 bar.”
There will be spot checks done by Highways similar to speed traps. Anyone with excess tyre pressure will be fined £100 on the spot. Anyone in club kit will also lead to a fine on the club of up to £1,000. The committee has appointed a new officer – Ty Urczech - to check tyre pressures ahead of the Where? Tri and all club organised events.
