Bike Maintenance for Beginners

I sure did! First thing I did!

Tightened everything then went round them all again, just to be sure.

Also greased all the bolts with Morgan Blue before fitting.

Torque wrench is a game changer, in the past I would have tightened everything far too much.

A little lesson learnt at the weekend.
Riding mate had a puncture and his pump wouldn’t work, no problem, I’d got mine.
Got pump out but no matter what we tried couldn’t unscrew the flexible tube from the body of the pump. Fortunately another rider had a pump too but had I been on my own that would have been game over.
I use a track pump at home so the mini pump rarely gets used and it never occurred to me to check the thread hadn’t seized. Undid easily with pliers when I got home and copious amounts of white dust from the corroded thread. Now greased up to prevent in future but I wonder how many of us are carrying pumps around but have never checked something like that.

Had that once with a spare tube of mine.

Got a puncture then couldn’t undo the valve to pump the new tube up! Call of shame to the wife on that occasion.

Carried co2 canisters for years now. Never actually take my mini pump out with me.

My tool bottle which launched at some point at the weekend had my co2 adaptor in (2nd time now, really should learn…) now I need to get a new one

I tend to think of CO2 as race equipment so carry them on my TT bike (and had to use one the other night) but my road bike has the pump permanently attached (to the bottle cage) and if I’m in no particular rush pumping the tyre up is no great inconvenience.

Fair. I just find the ease of co2 a winner. Effortless in comparison

I actually punctured this morning. Think I’m down to one canister. Need to grab some more!

post the link of where you get them from. I need to get some in the next week or so. Need to get an adaptor as well.

I may well have to pay over the odds and pop into Sigma on the way home.

I’d like to have more than one for Sunday too.

Also got a squeaky bum commute back with rain forecast and no spare tube :grimacing:

Does anywhere post them?
I thought they’re banned from being mailed out now?

I can’t order anything pressurised from Merlin :man_shrugging:t4:

Sure they were on Wiggle when i was looking the other day?

Bike is in mate’s LBS next Monday for a service. Asked him to get me in a new chain and chuck that on, so might ask him to chuck in some Co2 onto that order as well. Don’t mind paying a few more quid every now and again to a mate (obviously can’t afford to go doing that all the time!! haha).

I got mine delivered from sigma;

They’ll only send you 6 packs tho!!

If you are in the vicinity of a country shop that sells air rifles you can usually get them for a much reduced price. - They are used to power CO2 Air pistols so they generally sell bulk packs

Yeah!!!
I was looking at the guns last time I was at Chelford Farm Supplies - just there, looking
Like massive weapons.

Years ago I used to shoot in an air rifle discipline called field target, I still have my massive weapon.

I gave it up as I couldn’t stand talking to the guys who would describe shooting the odd squirel like they were on a big game hunt.

2 quid a co2 is crazy though, they’re cheaper on amazon and places.

65p each at planetx (although you have the delivery cost too)

https://www.co2cartridges.co.uk/ if you want lots, but out of stock.

Aren’t air pistols normally 12g though? Do they sell 16’s ?

Mostly 12, but there are multiple sizes around - some rifles even use them.

My inflator takes the 12g unthreaded type, but I guess it depends on what brand you have
