Are the Proviz ones any good? Saw someone cycling along in one once and was impressed at the visibility but never seen one in the flesh to look at properly to see if it has decent waterproofing and venting
The ones I’ve seen are pretty bulky iirc.
Low point of my 10+ years commuting when got overtaken by Mr Foldaway last night
After he went past he went into his aero/tuck position
I seem to have lost the ability to judge the weather and clothing for the commute in the last 18 months.
Half way to work this morning, sweating like a pig, and it dawned on me I was wearing everything I would in the depths of winter, bar the lobster gloves, just because the wind felt a bit chilly when I got my bike out
Waiting for @adam to let us know if he cycled in today… or @Whisk
Although I think @Adam goes via Knightsbridge ish, which looks pretty “swell”
To be fair to you the weather is all over the place at the minute. Single figures overnight and touching close to 20 in the day.
Couple of shit days and we will be back to mild summer weather this week
It was frickin windy today! I had to play dodge the debris after last night’s wind and rain! Almost dodged the rain, but a late shower caught me near the end.
Bike looks like I’ve been cyclocrossing to work though. As did my face!
Serious question though
…
Winter tyres. Talk to me. What’s cool and what’s not?
Any deals on? All about the deals.
28s
Ah I miss cycling to work in the rain. All the he stupid comments coming your way now.
“Is it raining?”
“You don’t need a shower now”
“Ian, how many times have I told you can’t come to the board meeting in your soaking wet cycling gear”. “Show me the HR policy that says that”.
Dodged it today
I’ve had conti four seasons for as long as I can remember. I doubt they are fast. But I feel safe on then, and I can’t remember the last time i needed to fix a tube. Which is the 2 most important bits for me commuting!
When I was bike commuting everyday I used the redways (cycle paths). It was puncture city. Tyres that were fine on the road, bag of shit.
In the end I went with Schawble Marathons, and the inner tubes with the gunk in. They don’t roll the best but have ultimate puncture protection. Nothing worse than changing a tube on a freezing cold, dark, wet morning.
Vittoria Rubino if you’ve got no corners or slick roads to contend with (they have zero grip)
But they are pretty much bomb proof.
You could of course go full on Armadillo and get some Radonneurs
That’s what I used for years. But they were no match for the cycle paths. 1000s of km on the road with them and 0 punctures. 1 week in winter on the paths, 2.
I’ve got Marathon Plus (even tougher and slower then the normal Marathons) on my Brompton (don’t know if they do them in “normal” sizes) and Gatorskins on my road bike. Very happy with both from a puncture protection point of view.
That was my commute setup. I now have slime in my winter bike inner tubes.
Rubino or Radonneurs?
Sorry the Rubinos. Great tyres, lasted for ages and cost like 12 quid or something
This is always the compromise.
Am I missing something here. You can put slime in inner tubes, or do I need to convert to tubeless.
If I go tubeless, is it easy to go back to normal in the summer, or am I then a full tubeless convert?
