I think they are concerned at the speed of wheel changes, read that somewhere. Marginal gainsš
As a complete technophobe, I fear disc brakes! I can just about change the blocks on rim brakes.
Had a go at changing the pads on my sons mountain bike years ago. 3 hours later gave in and took it to the bike shop
Donāt think itās been mentioned yet but disk brakes generally allow for wider rim/tyre combos. The added comfort has to be an advantage given the āqualityā of UK roads
Iām watching the Tour of the Basque Country & UAE Team Emirates are using rim brake Colnagos.
Brandon McNulty was not comfortable descending, coincidence?
I canāt find the highlights of todayās race on GCN. Just the āliveā replay.
Balls I just saw a headline with the result.
For anyone who wants a nearly-new rim brake frame, Cycle Exchange in Kingston have got 12 ex-Ineos Pinarello frames in stock.
Interesting point. I was thinking about upgrading the summer bike specifically to have discs a couple of years ago but changed my mind as I start using it again this spring. What hadnāt occurred to me until now was that Iām back using an alloy rim after my rear carbon rim broke.
Up here in NE Wales we have an abundance of steep, poorly surfaced lanes with the added attraction of mud and cow poo and on occasion, tractors filling the whole road and requiring emergency stops ⦠so decent brakes are pretty vital.
Wilco Kelderman blaming overheating disc rotors for causing broken spokes at the Giro.
Itās an interesting twist given that one of the benefits cited for disc brakes was that you avoided the risk of your rim overheating and causing a blow-out or a delamination on a carbon braking surface

They would need to be inspected by a metallurgist to determine the cause of failure so he is grasping a straws really.
Also surely the point the brakes get their hottest (downhill), is also when they are getting maximum cooling from air moving over them at speed.
I just cant see a disk brake heating a spoke to the point of breaking. The carbon rim problem is more likely because the actual structure surface is also the friction surface and carbon is its shite a dissipating heat
Yeah, I thought one of the arguments against the pros needing disc brakes for mountain stages is that they donāt touch the brakes much so there isnāt much heat build up with carbon rim brakes.
Descending Bodenburg in the wet, the delay on braking on carbon rims was heart stoppingā¦
The next time i buy a TT bike, it will be disc brakedā¦
That said, i have just purchased a Basso road bike with discs and am loving itā¦
Yes you never forget your first descent in the wet on carbon wheels when you squeeze the breaks and it actually feels like you are accelerating.
Needed new bibs after that.
Yup, IM Nice July 2014, pretty much every tight bend on the descent had a triathlete sat on the fence, possibly some ran out of talent rather than fading brakes
When it comes to descending I dont have any talent to run out of.
You have an excuse ⦠your heavy⦠ish.
Iām just crap at going down hill, if I ever buy another bike, after selling six in the next few months it 100% will have discs
Can I side track this briefly with a question I was going to start a new topic with?
Iām rubbish at descending. And Iām always on the brakes if I feel Iām going to fast. My new bike has carbon brake tracks. Is this a recipe for disaster, or are stories about wheels over heating and delaminating an over exaggeration.
I could pick up a pair of alloy rim climbing wheels easily enough.
Any thought?

Yes its possible to make a rim explode by heating too much. Are you ever likely to see that in the real world, who knows?
If youre crap a descending and ride the brakes like me and are doing an event in a hot country with loads of hills maybe I would be worried.
If it was really a big problem you would see a d hear about it loads. I dont know anyone whonhas had a problem.
