Okay, a rim brake “transmits no torque from hub to rim”, but in order to stop the bike, doesn’t it have to transmit torque from the rim to the hub?
Yup.

You are correct, it is in the opposite direction, so lacing needs to change, and possible design of spoke needs to change, but fundamentally the magnitude of the force on the spokes is very similar. If the failure was caused by disc brake, the problem is with the Roval wheels, not the disc brakes.
There has been lots of bad news about the Roval Alpinist wheels, which is a shame. I have a set of Roval CLX33 disc wheels, and they have been pretty much bomb proof
Absolutely, if the wheel fails (lets assume due to disc forces) then the wheel wasn’t built sufficiently well to take them. You can’t blame the brake for doing what it’s meant to.
Workman in blames tools shocker
His answer to that question is at the core of the argument I think.
I’ve had no problem with them on Zwift
Been there … Hardknott on Fred Whitton in 2006, still remember the fear (and fair to say I’d no experience then of anything like descending those tight bends at the top in poor conditions).
My opionion of disc vs rim has changed since I moved away from carbon rims. Beforehand, there was so much difference in braking confidence that replacing my summer bike with a disc brake bike was high on my list of priorities. Now it doesn’t really cross my mind - coupled with the fact that I do a lot of descents on narrow roads, often with poor surface so have a lot more skill and experience.
Have you moved to rim brake alloy rims?
Those hand built ones you mentioned elsewhere?
Alloy yes
Handbuilt … well remembered! I had a handbuilt front wheel which was retired at the end of last summer as the braking surface was worn out. Similar story for the DT Swiss rear which is now emergency spare.
I bought a pair of Hunt Areo Wide to replace them & very happy - perfectly light and aero enough for my needs
This is the dude who fell over in the wet in Morzine six years ago? Was it disk brakes then?
Being heavy is the reason I (think I) am good at descending. Clear the way mother*******, on your fucking left/right! GOOTFW.
Tri bikes should come with some kind of snow plow attachment you can flip down to sweep the people out of the way, the people who have never heard of late braking, racing line and/or are scared of scuffing their Rudys.
I had a similar experience coming down either Hardknott or Wrynose in the pissing rain in the 2014 Fred.
My hands were aching after, couldnt pull the brakes any harder!
That white wall at the bottom on the left hand side, stuff of nightmares years later
