He is a aware that a PULL buoy is meant to be used when NOT using your legs. There used to be people that did this in France and I really used to despair.
But that is my point - it went away
Matt’s had at least 5 epiphanies I reckon!
think 1 per year is usual, at least it was last time I checked the ecclesiastical calender
Hello everyone - sorry for no updates for a while.
Had a disaster at the weekend, had a really good ride on Friday - 56k nice and smooth and felt good and strong throughout so the longer distances are coming nicely. Played golf Sat and set out all my stuff for the Duathlon, mixed up all my nutrition and was all set, then my wife started to feel unwell and then an hour later I was feeling rough - cue 36 hours of vomiting and diarrhea
so saturday eve was spent in the bathroom with minimal sleep and Sunday was spent on 2 hour shifts each looking after our toddler who luckily didn’t get the stomach bug.
So very disappointed to miss my first event but have booked another duathlon for 21st of October.
Training update and had a great swimming lesson earlier, started to get the understanding of swimming smooth and not fighting the water. 250M unbroken with fins which is a PB followed by 150M without the fins broken in 25m with 5 breath rests
Short memory, it happens to the over 50’s
If I am honest, I lack the dedication to swimming to make the gains stick. I put in an effort to improve, suddenly it all starts to come good, then for whatever reason, I don’t put in the time to make it stick. Then I come back to swimming and I am back to square 1.
I am back to autumn swim training, and right back to swimming at 1:54/100m. I recon if I look back on Garmin I would guess my swim pace on 1/10/23 is within 1s/100m of where it was 1/10/17, 1/10/18. 1/10/19. 1/10/20. 1/10/21. 1/10/22
I am sure to have an epiphany some time in the spring
Closer than I ever got to a golf course
Hey everyone,
Bit of an update on the training, been quiet on here but have been pushing on in the backgroud.
Had my first ever 1 hour continuous run and managed to complete 9k so was very happy with that.
Completed 4oom unbroken in the pool today, was a mixture of freestyle and breaststroke but wanted to prove to myself I could do it, was absolute snails pace of 3.33m/100 but main thing for me is completing it as I have the super sprint tri on 29th. Next week will try open swim for first time.
Really wanted to do the sprint but I think 750m is going to be too much for me at the moment.
Bike - had 3 50km sessions with an average of 31/32km/h this week so that’s coming along nicely as well
Hey everyone,
Chalked up my first event at the weekend, has well and truly given me the bug, absolutely loved it!!!
Sprint Duathlon at Dubai Parks & resorts (theme park in Dubai). Great event and vibe.
5km Run - 28.13 - 5.38 pace
T1 - 1.29
Bike 21k - 41.26
T2 - 1.12
2.5km Run - 15.16 - 6.06
Felt really good on the first run, could have maybe pushed a bit harder but wasn’t sure what to leave for the rest of the race.
Bike felt good, probably could have pushed a bit harder but was feeling it in the legs
2nd run, thighs, calves and feet were killing when I started out but got into a rhythm, Not sure if I could have pushed harder, was worried if I sped up I might end up blowing up and stopping which I didn’t want.
24/49 overall so happy to be top half on my first event! Super Sprint Tri next week
Those look like pretty respectable numbers. In most triathlons, that would place you somewhere around the middle.
Pacing looks sensible - your second run was probably impacted by not having much experience running off the bike. That will improved with practice
You’ve now put down a solid benchmark
29 November is still 5 weeks away. If you can swim 400 continuos, as long as you get in the pool twice a week, there is no reason why you can’t do 750 continuous - I assume that it’s a pool swim.
When I am swimming in a pool, 400m continuous seems like a long set, however, on race day I can swim 3800m without any issue. There is definately a psycological element
Looking at your resent race, I recon you would do the swim in 20-25min, Bike 40min, run 30min (assuming 750m, 20km, 5km)
The Triathlon is 29th October so 6 days away so going to have to struggle though the 375m swim and see how I do, I’m in the pool 5 times a week at the moment and I’m making progress but it is slow and legs just constantly sinking and flailing wildly which is causing me issues.
Will the sea help me with the buoyancy of my hips/legs or is it not a noticeable difference?
sea water will certainly help with buoyancy. try floating in fresh/pool water and sea water and yo’ll see how much easier it is in the sea.
Some reason I thought 29 November. In that case it makes sense to do the super sprint. If you complete the swim and think that you could have done the longer swim, that would be really positive, there’s always a next time
Hey Everyone,
Little update from the weekend where I had my super sprint!!! Was a bit of an anti-climax in the end but still some good things to take away.
As you all know I’ve been struggling with the swim and was nervous before the event, had a test run in the sea for the first time and got 375 done in 3.10 min/100 pace the day before. This gave me some confidence that I could get it done in the sea. I actually find the open water swimming easier with the added buoyancy.
Come the day of the event, jumped in the water and found it was not as stressful/chaotic at the start as I thought and felt comfortable throughout the swim and finished with a PB of 2.46 min/100 - still super slow but progress.
Jumped on the bike feeling good and fresh and was flying along and passing people, then got a puncture and was unable to repair it
so that was the end of my race!!! Spent an hour when I got home practicing changing the inner tube so this wont be a problem next time!!!
Got a 5k and 10k run event this month before I jump into the Sprint distance on Nov 26th
Well done, it’s all good learning experience
Tip: try and find what caused the puncture in the tyre. If it’s a bit of wire or glass or a cactus thorn it may still be poking through and you’ll just puncture again.
At least you weren’t running tubulars!
Better luck next time
The bike course had speeds humps on it, I tried to take the hump at too much pace and it deflated as I hit it.
Had a bit of a fall from grace swimming last night in the pool, thought I’d be able to cruise through 400M after finding it easyish in the OW, it’s sooooooooooo much harder in the pool
Any update on this thread, or cast to the dark corners of the TT library?
