Wadebridge Sprint Triathlon 14 Aug 1992. I came 14th. The outdoor pool was baltic. It was a damp cool day. I wore budgie smugglers and a cut-off vest. Did the bike on an MTB.
Seaford Triathlon, September 2003. Sprint distance with a very lumpy sea swim - no wetsuit as didn’t have one - where I got dumped on the beach on exit like a beached whale……quiet at the back please! Swam in my running lycras and put a running vest on in T1. Borrowed road bike.
It’s close, but possibly might just have trumped you there J-Man
Jersey Sprint, May 1992. Not sure what date in May, that detail is lost in the mists of time. But pretty sure it was May. It was a proper sprint, 750m sea swim, none of this soft pool malarky. Wetsuits were optional, but not for me, because I didn’t have one. Also on a MTB. Finished, but certainly didn’t trouble the top half -wait who am I kidding, three quarters- of the leaderboard.
I was younger than you though
fair cop
probably still are too
pah - I was 50. and had also done my 1st marathon that year.
I’m sneaking in the easy way and doing a Duathlon in 2 weeks with my first sprint Tri 29th of Oct.
Yes I’d be pretty surprised if it snowed
Pool sprint I presume? I did do an October Sprint one year; much like late April ones, they can be a bit chilly on the bike (I usually put a jersey on over my trisuit for the bike).
He’s in the ME. Don’t think chill will be a factor!
Oh, I never picked up on this!
Dubai - should be riding a gold bike with a Louis Vuitton saddle and diamond bar plugs.
My first tri was Osprey Sprint on Portland 11 Oct 2015
Swim 450m - 9m14s
Bike 16.5km - 45m06s
Run 5k - 29m51s
Total - 1h24m12s
pool swim I am aware that I am not really that much faster now… I had lots of buoyancy at time
Bike time looks pretty terrible, but it started at the HMS Osprey, went over the top of Portland, down to Portland Bill and back again. I was borrowing my Brothers Specialized Tarmac S-Works, I remember riding a lot of the race behind a lady on a rusty / rattly Peugeot with a rack an mud guards
Run time doesn’t look too terrible considering I only started running 3 months earlier
I was supposed to be taking part in a Windsurfing competition in Portland harbour, except there was no wind. It was one of those glorious Indian Summer weekends. I happened to notice that the Osprey Sprint Tri was taking place on Sunday right next door to the National Sailing Accademy where we were supposed to be racing.
My Parents live in Weymouth, and my brother’s bike was in the garage, so I asked him if I could borrow it. I grabbed an old pair of trainers, shorts and tee shirt that were in the house and some cycling shorts, shirt and shoes that belonged to my brother. I bought a pair of speedo’s and goggles from a local sports shop, and I was set for my first triathlon. I actually did surprisingly well, finishing somewhere mid pack
I’m sure they’re around somewhere, I saw some with a Louis Vuitton golf back and head covers once out here.
BRW Corp Tri in the Domain, Sydney for me. Can’t remember when, 98 or 99 I think. The Domain is a park by the art museum and not far from the Opera House. Quite a tight packed park and a fairly narrow path for a tri.
It was meant to be something like a 500mtr swim, 15km bike and a 3km run. Larry’s place had 4 teams entered and despite being my first, I was on the ‘A Team’ due to being the gun TTer and bike racer at the time.
I missed the briefing at work due to a meeting, rocked up Sunday, we lined up for our start wave, all went well, so I thought, but turns out I was last in my team by a minute. They couldn’t work it out, I couldn’t work it it.
Then our captain said ‘you did do only 3 laps on the bike, right?’
Turns I did 4 because I hadn’t worked out how many laps it was Think I would have lapped two of them if I’d done just 3
Arborfield Oly Tri in 1989. Pool swim, think it was 1k, not 1.5, but a 40k bike and 10k run. Not sure where I came but I was a damn-sight quicker than I am now.
I wonder if it was the same year as Edinburgh NYD was my first Tri as well. I think it was 2005 we had sleet and it was impossible to see anything on Arthur’s Seat
Yes! 1/1/05 was my first. It was a bit of a blizzard on the run around Arthur’s Seat. It was a bit lonely round the back of the hill… I think quite a few sacked off the run. I recall the Commie Pool looking a bit like a triage center with lots of hypothermic triathletes wandering around in foil blankets being tended to by St John’s.
Be careful with fins. Great tool but they can add strain to the calf / achilles if overused, especially when running as well.
I feel like a novice May 2008 Eton Sprints , cold in the lake, hot on the run. Coming out of T2 , I had to turn left but my legs refused and I was caught by a marshall
Huh. Pretty sure I was there! I think it was my second race (I’d done a Thames Turbo Sprint before)
