Gravel Riding Chit Chat

The geometry on CX bikes is totally different.
I’ve had a CX bike - they’re short in the frame, for agility round corners, which makes the handling a bit “sketchy” when on the road, they feel really “lively” - or at least that was my experience.

My Gravel bike has a long wheelbase and feels nice and planted, not sure how else to say it :man_shrugging:t4:

Refresh my memory on your Gravel bike?

Maryka has a 90’s rockhopper as her “gravel bike” (not 29er of course, but then she’s 5’2")

I’m the same, all my gravel riding is done on a mtb. I read threads like this and think I’d love a new shiny gravel bike but then I think about the actual riding and can’t see it being better. Certainly not on the majority of routes I ride.

Gravel rides are really mixed road & trail because although there are some beutifull trails they are not 100% linked together so in practice more like 50:50. You need to kit the bike for the most extreme trail you are likley or would like to encounter. The problem with MTB is you just can’t to the milliage you can with a gravel/cx bike so you can only do local trails or drive there in the car.
You can be much more adventurous on a gravel bike going or expoloring wherever your mood takes you.

Should also say 50:50 mileage is probably 20:80 in time.

It’s bog standard currently.although my chainset is an FSA omega with Mesatooth ring.
Which I was a bit annoyed about.

Thanks all, I’ll look at some events. My 29er has Vittoria Mezzas on it at the moment, not a bad all year tyre but quite chunky for genuine gravel and road.
I can spin my gearing out on the road without too much bother, so a larger front chainring could be in order for the flatter more rolling stuff. Haven’t turned a pedal since Oct though. :smile:

This kept me entertained during today’s TrainerRoad session.

2024 anyone? I’ll do it if you do it @Poet rofl: And it’s suitable for MTBs @FatPom.

Is the Atlas Mountain in the UK?
If not, it’s a no from me.

EDIT: it’s in Morocco. I’ve been. It’s nice. If you ignore the slaying of animals on the street and blood letting.

Now…I’ve been looking at Dales Divide today :face_with_peeking_eye:
600km for my birthday - basically the same loop I’ve planned for the summer :joy:
(Think I’ll steal last years route and modify for mine)

Oh … and it’s FREE :sunglasses::heart_eyes:

Or there’s always Tajikistan? :exploding_head::exploding_head:
300km climb, anyone?

Finished watching it. 100% no. Thats an MTB event! And race directors that make you take stupid routes, why? I understand they want to make it hard but taking you off a path to walk through some bush or climb down into the river bed and back out for the sake of it? Why?!

Surely something like the Wales Duro is a good option for people who want a big adventure close to home?

That looks great but it’s a week before RttStones. I would recommend @tunster does it though :grin:

Why go to Wales when you can spend a weekend in Gods Own County:

Also, there are some AWESOME routes on here, a few near me, which I’ve nabbed parts of already :slight_smile:

A riding pal came third in this last year, I didn’t realise it was 550 miles :open_mouth:

I enjoyed Wales Duro, If your keen on your result it’s another that you could actually do well on a MTB as the last timed section is downhill with rocks for about 40 mins (The Gap) & the longest section in time. Would take forever to do the event though.
I’ve enjoyed all the Racing Collective events & recommend them, especially as they are free.

The route thing perplexed me. I get the feeling that some (most?) of the route issues he had were GPS/Wahoo related, and not route design. One thing I took away: never rely on a Wahoo for multi day events.

Last time I was in the Atlas hiking I got bacterial dysentery and overall the destination failed to impress.

I do however fancy the Badlands gravel race out of Grenada, Spain. I’m strangely obsessed by it. I may try and get an entry for 2024 and subconsciously hope not to get in :rofl:

I was watching an endurance running filmed called ‘Solo’ the other day with Jenny Tough. She said the only place in the world she’s ever felt unsafe running was in the Atlas Mountains.
