One of the guys in the repecharge came in a boat behind the leader to the gate, went to the same one but managed to get his boat between the leader and the gate so when they came out of the gate he was ahead, so maybe it’s a tactic.

They’ve just been doing repechage heats for the men’s 1500m.
Bit of a double edged sword for them, yeah they get another chance but it means 3 races in 3 days which apparently is a a tough gig.

First time I’ve seen it in athletics but kinda makes sense for the middle distance races where different heats can be run in vastly different times.

Rowing has repecharges. It gives a 2nd chance if the draw is uneven or if there’s an unfair advantage to certain lanes because of wind conditions
