Granted they’re not Olympic standard, but Adelaide (population ~1 million) has over 30 50m pools. “Only” 2x Olympic though
Plus the loss of the pool / sports centre at Lower Sydenham meaning that Downham / The Spa are that bit busier.
The scuba club I used to be part of has now pretty much gone under as none of the local pools are deep enough to do any decent practice in. They used Sydenham as the pool was 3m deep at the deepens and once a month used the diving pool at CP as that was 5m deep.
Real shame how bureaucratic messing around manages to remove recreation facilities at an amazing rate.
Unfortunately most councils’ finances are in a complete mess and public swimming pools usually run at an operating loss, so things aren’t going to get better anytime soon
Unfortunately yes. In cost vs value, numbers will always win.
Darrick Wood and there’s one in a primary school off Green st Green and one with flumes in the Glades
There’s a bunch of pools suitable for kids learning or messing about basically, but little of training quality
well they need another striker…and probably a deeper squad…
yep…i was impressed when there…
That’s positive, and would be a massive benefit to South London*. CP was the place I spent most of my free time when I first moved to London as it was still in my American football days and the London Olympians played their games on the main field inside the athletics track. We trained midweek and evenings on the crappy sand astro between the track and building.
More relevant to this forum is doing the sprint tri there as part of the London league. That ring road was so full of pot holes it would eject any bottles you had!
*it never really seemed like there was a backup plan for CP after they gave you the Olympic stadium over us. Our athletics “legacy” was a revamped CP. The fact it’s now happening anyway (albeit over a decade on) is probably the best result, as we still have the Olympic stadium, we’ll now have a decent CP, and spurs got a far better stadium in the right bit of London!
The loss of Walnuts and West Wickham mean all lessons went to Biggin Hill and Spa took a large number of regular morning adults. 6am the 4 public lanes are packed!
Paris has 50 iirc, and it’s more than the entire UK though
It’s 18m long!
Bromley boast about the number of pools but none are suitable for proper lap swimming which is the issue. The glades is laughable 75% of it is wasted on a “beach entry” fun no doubt but look at crawley or my new favourite Winchester where they have fun pools and a 50m 8 lane pool with boom.
