Kona 2021

That’s how I read it, also means I can lock horns with @Matthew_Spooner in 2023……

A great result for those who gambled this year.

Pretty sure @chickenboy s mate Joe turned a slot down from Tallinn last week.

Don’t think a deferral was offered to him

That’s right buddy. I think he’s trying to line up Kona 2022 with his better half Katie, AND also getting married in the same year. #winningcouple

Casper Stornes was trying to join KB and Iden at Kona in Frankfurt today. I wonder if his apparent blow up just before half way on the run will be making KB reassess his self belief that the physiological metrics indicates he can easily run a good marathon, despite having never actually done it.

Stornes was pushing the pace in the lead chase run group (in second overall) to 13.6k. By the next checkpoint at 18.2k he’d dropped 16s to the guy he was running with, and by 21k he was 2:18 back from that guy, and down to 5th.

Separately, McNamee looks to be going well. Went off steady at the start of the run and let Stornes and the other guy go a bit. But now 3rd and they’re all reeling in the leader who started the run with an 8 minute lead but it’s now down to under 3

2:42 marathon for McNamee ran himself up to 3rd. assume that sorts his KQ (can’t remember how many slots and who has already Q’d).

Such a patient, smart athlete.

Always flies massively under the radar and puts out impressively consistent performances.

Proper athlete

Yep definitely the ‘Anti-Lionel’, the complete opposite approach.

I really like McNamee, he’s a witty guy and a solid triathlete.

Just like the old days, when they would have wildcard invitations every year.

It was a good race to watch despite having lots of connection issues and breaking it up over the day. Somehow avoided seeing the result until I watched the finish line.

Not often you see so many guys come into transition together.

I’m also a McNamee fan, thought 2019 might have been his year but fearing he maybe be lost his chance now. Was it two podiums at Kona or three?

He got two third places.

Wonder who the next Brit male podium will be. Smart money has to be McNamee, Although I think he needs ‘easy’ bike conditions, weren’t his two podiums the ‘easy bike’ Lange win years?

Yep, as far as I recall. Skipper could be in with a shout on the right day. Wasn’t he 6th or 7th in 19?

Johnny before Ali?

Yeah, I’m not writing off McNamee by any means but I think it’s time for Skipper to step up. Results for him do seem to be a bit of a dice roll though.

Lange and Frodo are such solid performers, maybe a dice roll is what is needed?

I think Skippers actually very competitive going the full distance.

It’s the 70.3s where he seems to have issues

Issue with Skipper is that in a really stacked field his swim deficit is a big issue. He needs other Uber bikers to work with, and no Uber bikers like Frodo in the groups ahead.

A lot has to go right for him. Arguably that’s the same as McNamee, but McNamee has had the race pan out exactly as he needed a couple of times. I don’t think Skipper has had that yet, like needing Lionel and Kienle to work with on the bike and neither happening ( like the Kienle mechanical).

I’m going to go out on a limb: George Goodwin.

Yeah good call. Plying his trade patiently and doing very well. :+1:t3:

You never know but Goodwin is a distant outside chance for my money. If I’m going with IM novices I’d go with Blummenfelt. Sticking with GBR, I suspect McNamee will place highest but it’d take Skipper’s lucky day or swim improvement to take a win.

I see Goodwin as a new, upgraded McNamee.
