Nike Zoom Fly/Vaporfly 4 and NEXT% - The Thread

Lol, mine are never going to get used, rain on Saturday AM for what was going to be a parkrun testout.

Jeff

I tried them on around the house last night. Iā€™m not sure i could wear them for a mara - by stupid hobbit feet literally hang over the edges of the mid foot (the narrowest part of your foot/the shoe). I can feel the edges of the sole sort of digging into the soft fleshy bit in the middle of my foot.

If they really are quick, i am sure i could take that discomfort for an hour or so, maybe a half. But i donā€™t think it would be pretty for over 2 hours. My feet suck!!!

The flyknit is quite odd - never worn a shoe like that before. I almost felt like i shouldnā€™t have been wearing socks, as it looks so daft (though i wonā€™t make that mistake!). I get what people mean when they say they donā€™t feel secure around the foot.

But once i started walking on them - wow. You really notice that compress --> propel of the shoe. Even just strolling through the kitchen. Once i walked into the lounge, on carpet, i didnā€™t notice it so much, bt back onto the hard floor and they were just wanting to throw me forwards!

Iā€™m really keen to get racing in them now, but i have a feeling it will be a massive trade off of comfort and fit vs. what speed benefit they will give me. Itā€™s going to be a difficult one to evaluate.

On a side note, i ordered a pair of Altra Escalantes. Now they were a lovely shoe - wide, light and flexible, and they do a trimmed down race version. I know they donā€™t have the fancy tech of the NIke, but they have some proprietary foam tech (just like all the others do). If comfort is to be my defining factor, then they may the way to go for me.

Iā€™m parkrunning in mine again on Saturday, if I can get up and out on time

Yeah, 9am is an early start. Good luck for the 113 next month :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Yeah iā€™m planning on doing the same. Only ate my first proper meal since Saturday last night, so think iā€™ll be a bit depleted still.

Happily though, my usual hunger is back. After leaving the house after breakfast i thought iā€™d make up for it and swing by the golden arches for a second breaky and a coffee!! :grinning:

Going to try an easy bimble today.

The escalante must be the comfiest trainers Iā€™ve ever had, never really ran in them though, the drop terrified me

Jeff

That is the post-parkrun habit!

Is there really just 24 days until the 113 :frowning_with_open_mouth:
Best start my tapir

Taper from what?

The HUGE volume of training Iā€™ve been doing.
At least 29 hours per week (including the packing, unpacking, getting ready, showering etc)
I need to be ā€œFreshā€ come Race day.
Iā€™m worried that I havenā€™t been consuming my 1kg of spuds per day, so will look to use the extra time to digest those

ā€¦and travelling time.

Despite my initial view on support, having now run a marathon in them, I found them to be really comfortable, in fact I didnā€™t get any blisters, I have never run a half without a couple of blisters. I also have duck shaped feet, and my shoes all fail eventually on the left foot next to my big toe knuckle, however, I didnā€™t experience any issue with the Vapor Fly.

That genuinely just made me laugh out loud at my desk. Luckily itā€™s only me in today

(no of course thatā€™s not why iā€™ve been on TT all day today ā€¦ how very dare you!!)

Same. One of the biggest upsides for me.

I find socks to be the best way to stop blisters.

Not only wearing them, but the correct ones.

For me, the 2XU ones or the X-Socks with the silver strands (snake oil?) leave me foot fresh.
The Hilly two skins are also great, but make the 4% too small for me.

WHEN ARE THE NEXT% OUT!!!

Injinji for me when it comes to socks. Absolutely love them!

Yes they are great, but transition time would be shocking

Donā€™t you need specialist socks for those Grecian feet of yours?

Did I read the title correctly, are NEXT producing shoes for Nike???

I need a forefoot pair that takes 20% off my timeā€¦

WOW :open_mouth: they are good

So, I did the local parkrun this morning, on the current route over recent months Iā€™ve generally been hovering around 20:00, best was about 19:57 I think, although a couple of weeks ago I cruised round in 20:20 with a backpack on.

It was a quick day today, could have been a bit warmer but hardly any wind. Also, having had an easier week and only a short swim on Friday I was fairly fresh, although Iā€™ve had a hassly stressful week outside of training and have been a bit tired from a weekend away last week with 2 late nights and drinking.

But, due to the injuries Iā€™ve only averaged 18K RPW and mostly fairly steady for about 8 weeks.

During the warmup I felt a bit lifeless which actually is often a good sign for me, the shoes felt quite squidgy and not the most stable.

I went off at a fairly good pace, the start of this run is a bit twisty, running through bollards and then down a narrow towpath so it makes a bit of sense to try and do at least the first 500M pretty hard.

They really come alive when you are running fast (OK, my fast isnā€™t as fast as a lot of people) and I actually thought they had better grip and turning than I was expecting, anyone following me on strava will be able to see the dead or sharp turns, there must be 20+ in the course.

Got round in 19:18, this is about 40 seconds faster than Iā€™ve done it in and only 25 seconds off my 5K PB on a fast course when I was going a lot better etc.

My statto mate actually calculated it as about 4%

So, Iā€™d like to do it with the normal trainers on again soon, but thereā€™s definitely something in them.

Theyā€™ll only be coming out for big races but Iā€™d love to know how theyā€™d feel after a marathon.

I actually suspect that on an IM marathon you wonā€™t get anywhere near the same effect but if they do reduce the fatigue in your legs late on it will be hard to quantify. I will be using them at Hamburg though.
