The Bastion route is 3000m in 112miles , and even the flat is false and only about 2 miles of it also. It is then followed by a trail marathon with close to 1000m of climbing. The swim was flat though.
@explorerJC has done it also (@joex you must ride the course)
I know the Guantlet course well enough, sadly, Bastion adds 15km out and back further south doesn’t it?
I think Gauntlet is 45km +750m loops of misery.
As an experiment with no training for two years…
abject misery…
the swim was uphill too…
At ice cream van car park at top of Ashdown, you keep going straight down, small loop and back up again and turn back onto course About 10miles a lap, 8 of which are descent and climb back up. Run is same route, just 4 times
Better today, alternated gels with real food, food on the hour, gels in between. More climbing, slower pace, so not like for like but felt stronger at the end.
1800m in 120km. Just need to find the right type of food. Nakd bars have some not too sweet flavours, but a cheap flapjack from Home Bargains is still favourite, just a bit much all in one go.
And 2 bottles is not enough drink. Need to plan refills as things get longer and hopefully warmer.
Depends how big your bottles are?
550ml = no way!!!
800ml = perhaps?
But nice one for figuring it out
I got a free Clif bar yesterday, reminded me how good they are
Well, good for Sports Nutrition stuff, but they be expensiveAF
I just ordered two new 950ml bidons for this very reason. My other bottles are 500ml and I was running dry on some remote rides. I’m going to experiment with 120-160g of sugar in each.
How much was that?
Dunno actually just swiped my card.

Yeah, you’ve spent too much time over the border in Lancashire and are picking up bad habits.
Your status as a Yorkshireman will be rescinded if you continue like this
I have a 1ltr bottle that I bought for a BTA for an even on the TT bike that had a big distance in the heat before the first aid station. (maybe it was older edition of LCW?)
It kind of worked in testing but once about 500ml had gone it caused to much sloshing and I could feel it through the handling.
Still have it but it gets used on my WFH desk now.
I’ve always found 500ml bottle too small and 900/1L too awkward to handle on the move. Have always used 750ml, never realised anyone used anything else.
Having said that, for any ride over 4 hrs I’ll use a 2L camelback and typically not even take a bottle
Sugary drink mixes make hydration packs go manky though? Bottles I just whack in the dishwasher.
That’s true - however, I only use electrolyte tabs so don’t really have a furry bladder problem.
I still disinfect every couple of months, about half as frequently as I did when I was using sugary drinks.
I never regretted a camelback approach but I was doing largely unsupported events and preferred to have control over the type of drink and its concentration
Happy to hear that
