Open water swim season starting

I think Ullswater might be a bit colder :joy:

It will be, but hopefully wetsuit to the rescue :+1:

Losing a couple of pool swims this weekend due to Easter closures & got my first swimrun in early May….just planting the idea & mentally prepping atm.

How’s your new wetsuit @gingerbongo ?

err … it’s arrived, but I haven’t got round to trying it on yet!

Initial reactions are that it certainly feels a little different to your normal wetsuit. Hard to describe, but maybe a bit smoother. It’s noticeably heavier than my last one; but then I’ve moved from a tri/swimming one to a surf one and I’ve gone up to 4/3, so that’s to be expected. It’s nice and fuzzy on the inside; so will be perfect for sitting around in the water.

Need to brave it and get in the sea and see how my back responds. It’s not a fan of the cold, so I’m a little concerned as progress has been much, much slower than I’d hoped.

April is a bit keen for me, which icy seas will you be numbing your extremities with?

It would probably be Hanmer Mere.

I had to google that was a real place :face_with_hand_over_mouth:

Nippy. Cant recall if lakes warm sooner than the seas? Only 9°C in coastal waters now.

Does the lake shrink in cold weather?

I was going to post on here 2 weeks ago when the local lakes got back to double digits.

Just checked, not any warmer than 2 weeks ago, actually a bit colder today 9.2C to 10.2C

It was 10.5C.

Its a hard ‘NO’ from me until it gets to 17C

that’s almost non wetsuit temps FFS

World Aquatics 18+ is non wetsuit, and they swim 10k (same temp for kids as well!)

Liverpool eliminator or a different one?

I wanted to do that but was working and now it’s fully booked even if I could get a swap. Might enter the September one but if I do an Ironman 3 weeks earlier I doubt I’d be able to

My friend insists in 2007-2012 they were doing 5 and 10ks non-wetsuit in 12-16C. I reckon he won Scottish champs most years as the only one capable of managing 2 hours in the cold.

Yer in Scotland they just go with it, kid in El Nino’s squad was Scottish 5 and 10k champ in 16AG last year and said it was 14 at best

I know, I hate the cold though, and hate cold water more.

Well if you are swimming that far it makes sense, plenty of time to over heat

PS, I think my longest OWS is 2500m ish

15 longest swims, all pool.

Top 10 OWS

When I went in with the kids last June it was 16, and we mandated wetsuits as we were coaching so floating about, and it was a bit chilly to get in but not too bad. Only trouble Ive ever had was one year , might have been when @Jorgan and I went to St Polten so needed early OW swimming, but went in April after a tough winter, and it was 11 something; OK once you got going in wetsuit but ice cream head was bad and my feet took all day to warm up

St Polten was generally the 3rd weekend in May, so yes an early start to the OW training if you were preparing properly!

Liverpool eliminator.

Unfortunately I think I’m in France for the September one……I say unfortunately but I’ll be quite happy to be in the Vaucluse :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Finally got an open water swim in…

Joking aside, 10.5 - 13C in the local lakes today.

Most dont open for general swimming until 1st May, unless you’ve done a cold water course.
