PEDs

earnings per click are almost non existent - YouTube ad revenue over a few grand a month is very rare. The money, what there is, comes from brands and sponsors and freebies. But it’s all relative, kiting out of gym for free might sound good but is it really worth much more than a company car from a regular job?

It’s not a job done for large wealth.

Oh man I got bored and quit half way through, is it near the end?

Ah. Sounds like my commentary for the IM run leg.

@MarkLewis not hating on it, just didn’t think it was as engaging as the previous one.

I’ll take a half watch :joy:

Okay, watched it now it literally started where I had dropped out ha ha.

I won’t just whine like a baby, I’ll look like a baby in Lycra Mark.

I still think you should try the training thread of the off topic thread, but it seems you’re just here for PEDs so I’ll have a half hearted attempt at serious engagement.

Your position that you are on medication and a perhaps being discriminated against is a bit thin, given that Hyrox will absolutely let you “play” as you put it. I’d recommend parkrun as well, maybe set up a community based non-competitive lifting/running thing?

The serious issues around PEDs are not really about old people like us imho, it’s about young professionals and children. When I first got into this debate I wasn’t that fussed about drugs but over time I learned how much what we old folk do and say, multiplied on social media, affects kids. Even if we can justify our personal position, the detail is lost and translated into Mark Lewis says it’s okay so I’m gonna do it. Their mum might say, but you’re 3% body fat, 15yo and naturally testosteroned out to the max, they’ll still shove in whatever they find in the gym changing rooms…because it’s okay, everyone is doing it.

And yes, if it means that you don’t get a participation medal hyrox event, then it’s worth the cost. Join us at parkrun instead, no Lycra required and probably more mental health support than you’ve ever seen.

El Niño follows too many bodybuilding knobs and was trying to convince me T was fine as some freaks with chicken legs says it’s ok :joy: It’s hard to explain subtleties to 17 year old know it alls though that T prescribed in small doses is different to injecting yourself black market sh!te.

I think half the problem with prescribed and people that wear too much lycra is the yanks who clearly abuse their health services so they can go to Kona. I’m guessing it’s not so easy under the NHS.

Mine did too, now he’s gone the other way, virtually inactive and massively overweight. American pharmaceutical culture is taking over, everything is a contain, and they can sell you a drug for anything/everything.

As I’ve said before, instead of fixing our daughters body image issues we’ve taught them to our sons. So they can buy makeup too.

So - not sure what thread you were referring too - I was only on this one as it’s the one I was sent links to. Happy to check out the other.

The first thing I should probably clarify - Mark Lewis, YouTuber is as “real” as Ricky Gervais on stage. It is me, but it’s me playing that role. Sometimes that’s all me…other times it’s less of it. So nobody should take anything I say too seriously - hence why I’ve said a million times…“no advice, I’m not your mum” So with that in mind - no, I don’t think Hyrox are discriminating against me . It is a sport I will never do again and had quit before they even introduced the drugs policy. It’s simply not an activity that interest me anymore. As I said in that very video, it has turned into something quite different to what it was when I began. The reason I raise it is because I receive many questions about it daily and often from people who do require age related TRT and feel self-conscious or ashamed or embarrassed because they now feel like they are cheating. It is a tactic I often employ as part of my content - highlighting an issue I am encountering, not because I really care myself, but because I know I can act as a proxy for those that do.

As for parkrun, I love Parkrun and without it would never have even found fitness let alone social media fitness but I have zero interest in setting up anything community based. Again, Mark Lewis is not a real person. It’s not even a real name. Taking that persona into the public is of no interest and something I very rarely did on camera. In fact, the vast majority of my competitions and races were competed by me, as me, not Mark Lewis. Ultimately, there’s a reason I live in the countryside surrounded by absolutely nobody. :joy:

But your main point about peds is absolutely spot-on. I’m a father of three boys who all went through their teenagers while I was on testosterone. I’m also a grandfather of a boy who will encounter goodness knows what when he walks into a gym in 15 years time. So I’m acutely aware of the issue. And my parenting isn’t going to be matched by every parent so yes, plenty of kids will end up on gear. I just don’t think I’m really the person to address it. I don’t think there are many teenagers using Mark Lewis as their motivator to score underground gear so I don’t feel responsible for too much of the problem. Compared to any random hollywood actor, I’m a nothing on that scale. So I tackle the other end of the problem which is men in their 50s terrified of telling their wives they are considering tackling their hormones because they think they will look like they’re more focused on achieving a physique they should feel stupid to want rather than trying to get their head in a good place to get out of bed without feeling like shit. I can help there and get a huge amount of feedback to know peoples lives have been changed by me for the better.

Of course, hyrox is in an absolutely impossible situation. And I’ve done long podcasts on the topics for other channels. They are clearly riddled with people using testosterone for performance enhancement and have to address it but a blanket ban was, in my opinion, just a rather lazy way of doing so. It’s a bit like banning knives. People carrying knives when they shouldn’t don’t care and the carpenter who keeps a box cutter in his works van stresses over whether or not he should. What’s the solution? I have no idea, but nobody is even discussing it so I thought I would.

But dont even read too much into that choice - I have a need to tick over the channel for sponsors and such so need the odd video now and then. I flick through my emails, see what people are contacting me about and just go with that. Lately its lots of - are you doing Hyrox, are you still or drugs…so theres my video. I put on my Mark Lewis hat, write a one liner about triathletes cause it makes me chuckle (but could just as easily be any sport…I’m punching up either way so anyone is fair game) and chat to camera for half an hour before going back to feeding my goats.

I dont take it too serious. I hope others dont either. Its youtube, its 10 mins of brain off. It’s not real life…unless someone wants to tell me I changed theirs and they now feel great - then I’ll take all the credit :joy:

Nice post, and no I don’t think people should be ashamed of medicine but it is healthy to be sceptical of people taking PEDs and competing. If you want to drive clicks I would think that it’s far more controversial to post “They were RIGHT, I am a drugs CHEAT and so are YOU”…?

Competition is sometimes healthy but sometimes drives dysmorphia of some degree. For some reason I think it’s really important to finish a half iron in less than 5hrs rather than less than 6h. That makes me regret my body fat percentage. And that makes me feel bad every day. Is the problem the competition, or the athlete? Or the social media that tells us guys should get ripped? I don’t know and increasingly, just don’t care.

If I was online and publishing, which we all are by nature of being on forums, I would represent the part of my personality that believes in good things*, and on balance PEDs and supporting the medicalisation of aging, are not. Imho.

*training a reasonable amount, beer also a reasonable amount, hitting bikes with hammers, and DIY fails.

I basically said to El Niño, because saying don’t do something means there’s more chance they will, you are a swimmer, they test at nationals, they test at the AP International and it’s instant 4 year ban for first offence, life for second! From all sports.

This enhanced games has warped so many kids ideas also.

My son .. workaholic .. 10 houses by 30 or death is his mantra ?!

God help us all.. is a regular weight trainer, very impressive bench press single ( still can’t beat his old dad in a press up comp ?!) is surrounded by ped use in his local gyms / circle of friends

These guys ( I’ve talked to most of them ) are normal hard working young lads .. they see test use as a normal progression when they’re max lifts plateau and they want to go to Ibiza / marbs for a two week show off with a six pack

This … is the world we live in today .. for this .. why not I guess ( when they come back many don’t train for a month .. at all ?!

for any form of competition at all .. ever .. it’s just .. wrong.

It’s hardwired in to our generation the next ones .. not so much .. this is going to get silly/ messy in the next few decades

Agree with the posts above - its a pity the same drug is creating two issues because it would be simpler to tackle if were not the case. It’s a shame no one will invent a testosterone that has none of the PED “side effects”. It just lets old blokes feel good, feel healthy, enjoy life/sex/whatever. Be a bit odd to begrudge them that because what else…stop them wearing glasses too? :joy:

Instead you have people that SHOULD be talking to a DR afraid to do so because they assume you need to look like, or want to look like, Jack Reacher. There are no “poster boys” for TRT that are out of shape but happy (apart from me :joy: ) and there never will be because if you dont “look” like you’re on it - why would you ever say you were in this climate?

And you’ll never stop the kids using because being jacked is just valuable…Gym Shark is a billion dollar company in a few years off the back of young men on steroids…Gladiators is massive again, because of (in a large part) steroids. While being huge is seen as cool and sexy, youngsters will want a bite of it. Ironically - then really needing TRT in their 40’s cause their system is screwed.

Well I guess I can say more than most having an insight into that world the average person doesn’t have. Doesn’t mean they’ll listen, but it’s something.
