Strava

I they’d desperately trying to rephrase their statement and suggest barely.1% of plugins are affected.

Sounds like damage limitation.

Playing devils advocate for a moment, I’ve seen complaints before when Strava required other companies to protect the data being shared which was imo completely reasonable. The companies refused to do it and told their customers Strava was refusing/blocking or whatever when in fact they should’ve just done the right thing and complied with Strava’s reqs.

On this new point it’s entirely possible that some companies are taking our data and misusing it in ways we don’t know. And given they are the custodians of our data then I think there are good elements to this.

On the other hand, everything everyone else posted.

Facebook have done pretty well out of using our data for their monetary gain for years. 3rd parties pay FB a lot of money to access it.

Good point, have done the same. I only really use the route creation feature, not really worth £55 / year

As someone on here said, possibly poet if you remember him!

If you don’t pay for the product you are the product.

Curious.

Just been prompted to login on the Strava app for the first time in forever. I wonder if there’s a breach element to this.

Yeah, that’s been my only use for the premium options too, and I think I can cover that with OutdoorActive which I use quite a lot.

Fine for me so far.

But a lot of the data on facebook, originates on facebook. Written posts, comments, likes/reactions, interaction with ads, etc, are all their own data that originates on their platform.

That’s very different to the core data strava obtains, which they themselves obtain via API’s from elsewhere. It’s fair enough to say their stats on kudos, comments, picture uploads, etc, is analogous. But not many third parties are doing anything with that part of their data. Strava is just a conduit for the core GPS data which is not the same as facebook.

I can’t help but wonder if its all a bit of over reaction. Not sure. I dont think it is clear what is affected and what isnt. Probably even less clear with a bit of a u-turn and fire fighting the flack that they seem to be doing.

David Tinker from Intervals.icu

"I have just had a call with Strava about the changes to the Strava API terms and conditions, specifically the requirement to only show Strava activities to the athlete who performed the activity.

Strava’s intention was to avoid the situation where someone grants access to their data to someone else (e.g. accepts a follow request on Intervals.icu) and then forgets about it leading to privacy problems much later.

The intention is not to prohibit coaching relationships. So intervals.icu can continue to allow coaches to see their athlete’s data from Strava on Intervals.icu.

So soon your followers will not be able to see your Strava activities but your coach will. This is a great outcome for everyone being coached on Intervals.icu and for coaches using the platform to manage their athletes."

You can follow people on Intervals?

If they send you a link I think.

You can join and create groups as well.

Plus copy shared plans, workout and charts.

Pretty sums up my year! :pensive:

I’ll write a reflection in the 24 thread at some point. Funny old year.

Absolutely shameful that I’ve done only just over 1000k in total this year as I’ve barely done anything apart from gain weight.

Their over egging of my achievements makes it feel almost more like the Strava roast than any genuine praise.
