I’ve done a 5:18 and you know how slow my short times are
5:33 at Lakesman off 166w - wouldnt say I was particularly aero either.
Hope you were on “The List”.
As there were a lot of TT1 supporter at the race that year.
“Race Strong!”
Cheers, Paul.
Absolutely! Got cheered on at the top of Lyons Gate by the gang
I remember huge TT mobs at the Ballbuster and Vitruvian back in the day.
Not sure I’ve seen it before, I think there was another fairly similar that then went to be chargeable, unless it was that one.
Just looking at my results that are on there, pre-2016 are missing. Some good and painful memories
The other one is ObsTri.
That I know of.
I had an idea to make a site like Endurance Data whilst I was learning Python. But someone had already done it. And better than my idea
Although…I still think a “Kona Lookup” of entrants’ nest/ Top 10 results would be worthwhile.
I.e who is entered in this race I’m doing and what’s theirs best result(s)?
Yes, OBS tri - you need to pay though to see results from the last year
Don’t think I ever did that much swimming, just to average 8-10k most of the year round though which helps and did a few bigger weeks as IM’s got closer, as well as some of the IM distance open water events.
Think I’d plateaued at swimming and despite getting my stroke looked at I wasn’t really going to get much better as I’m not very flexible.
Agree with your point that the swim should feel easy though.
I used to do more TT’s in those days and either did training rides on a bike with clipons or tried to keep on the drops, not quite as extreme as the TT bike but a useful compromise.
I am glad JJ was able to shed light as I am neither of those.
This was my first IM on a TT bike, interestingly(ish) when I did Outlaw the previous year (the one as mentioned held on the sun), I was on a road bike with clip-ons and did exactly the same time to nearest minute, 5:32, so I must have been churning out more power that year. I was unable to run, but of course I blame that on the heat and not the over biking…
I see Jim has already given you the technical explanation of how it’s possible, but as another n=1… 5:19 off 163AP/170NP.
I wouldn’t say I’m particularly aero either.
Yeah, it still blows my mind.
I guess it goes to show just how poor UK roads are and also what a lonely effort looks like:
Outlaw 2021 (disc, 82mm front, Giro Aerohead)
TT bike Training ride, May 2021. 35mm aluminium wheels, road helmet, wind cape (it hailed and snowed for the last 20km)
I know I’m a shorter person, and therefore slightly more aero as a result of that, but your power to speed ratio does seem a bit low. I didn’t think the road surface at Outlaw was too bad tbh.
Obviously different days, so conditions could play a part, but for the same power as you I’d have ridden 4:58 if I’d just doubled up my half time last year (I clearly couldn’t have actually done that, but that’s sort of irrelevant)
Disc, 60mm front, giro areohead as well
Hmm…perhaps, yes
Here’s a TT on single carriageway A roads, not great surfaces.
I didn’t have a disc for this one 101mm rear, Carnac Kronos helmet.
(I’d ran sub18 at parkrun in the morning, went home, had a nap, then cycled down for a 1421 start time)
we would need to compare with other people on the same day, as course and conditions can be radically different, but 40kph off 267w is not very aerodynamic. Yes you’re in the 80kg+ category not the 70+ category most of us, but needs to be pretty hilly for that to make big differences.
Flat as that TT course
So was my 100 miler and so is outlaw.
So whilst I “look” aero, I’m not very at all
Cheers
Had a look on Strava.
There’s a 58:45 for 240W and a 1:00:48 for 276W.
It was a windy day.
60w more to only gain <8mins. Surprising. I always used to think how if I can only add 10w or so, then I’d gain a chunk of time, but that seems to suggest not
Yes, it’s not a huge margin is it.
Thought I did a pretty good job with that ride. Pretty much rode to target and had a decent run off.
Id love to get a proper fit and see how much I could save
or your power meter is off, or you’re power fluctuates more than expected, or you sit up out of the position too much etc. You can’t over-assume too much just based on single overall watts to speed. The strava comparisons suggests the 25mile TT wasn’t that fast, so you perhaps weren’t losing that much, it’s not as if there were people doing 49’s on 280 watts.
