Sub 17 5km Thread

Alderley Edge bypass - about 4km out, 4km back - cycle path/footpath on both sides of the road.
It is utterly stupendous for intervals.
However, it is mildly undulating.

I ran a 36:34 10km on it last July (they had a little bit into Wilmslow and back to make up the distance)

Before I moved, I just ran around a 1.2km footpath loop, or up and down the footpath on the A50.

Good stuff there YKK! You certainly seem to have been able to keep the running mojo up, even as you saw your key races slip on by. Any idea how NZ are going to approach a return to sport?

@Poet @gingerbongo

Thanks. It seems that by roads and cycle paths are good options.
Don’t really have anything like that that ends near my house unfortunately. For a test I’d drive somewhere but not for my regular runs.

I did the 5k challenge for the 'gram as laps round the park nearby - slight hill across it so you get a 100m ish downhill section then the rest of the 800m lap is gradually back up, all gravel track but pretty good for fast paced running and it’s all open so easy enough to dodge dog walkers and perambulators

I’m lucky enough to have options of the docks and a large flattish open park that are both 2km perimeter with pavement wide enough for ~4 people and full view without trees/blind corners. There is a much nicer park with the canal going through it a few hundred metres away so I tend to avoid that at the moment, especially the canal path if its sunny.
I grew up in a small market town, went back for a week in Feb with a plan to do a 5km test during the week and realised there was far too high a chance it would be interrupted crossing roads or pavements to make it worth it. Would have still thought there’d be enough housing estates to be able to do training session fast running, just not race efforts?

I’ve got circa 8km of flat seafront here on the Essex Riviera but boy can the wind catch you out at the turn sometimes. Being that i live at the western end, this can happen quite a lot given the prevalence of South-westerlies. I know quite a few people took advantage of the spring Easterlies to clock their virtual 5k times recently… mugs like me ‘kept it honest’
I’m now in a quandary for the virtual mile i’ve signed up for… there will be a nice punchy easterly tomorrow which i could harness… but i could really do with an extra days rest after stupidly doing loads of squat/lunge/deadlift shenanigans this morning. I’m also dreading it as i have no idea what pace to target…

easy … just look to Chris

I surprised myself, Normally I hate running hard on my own, but with no races I switched too segment chasing during level 4 as the roads were empty (as I said over on the covid thread). Me and another guy from my club went at each other a fair bit. Ended up being quite good fun. I have a couple that will be very hard to beat, ie 0.7k downhill at 2:47 min/ks on the road that is the run off from the motorway. That ain’t going to be free of traffic again to hit the corners well. Anyway fun is over now…

As for races, no word yet, we may drop back down to 2, where by I hope my local 5k beer run will start. The advantage of being over here as well is that there is not many people, so all the races are quite small anyhow. Level 2 was <500 outside (this may change though), that may open parkrun up They are probably scared that every man and his dog will turn up for the first one due to lave of any other race. So maybe not.

My club is talking about putting on some local races as well, so that may be the way it goes.

With all the postponements it looks like I could be racing every weekend in 4 months, though that would be a great problem to have!

Good 5k of intervals, hopefully means nearly there. Might attempt it soon! Current pb is 3:31 pace, sub 17 is 3:24. Today could have been but quicker too but bit slippy after morning rain, especially the first 1k interval.

You guys have got to up your game a bit.

New British record of 13:20 for Marc Scott & a not too shabby 13:46 from Jonny Brownlee.

Alex Yee as well, would have had a chance in Tokyo if it had gone ahead.

Great time for that 80 year old in 4th

See that really should be the story, but no it’s all about the young pro-athletes.

Is that Tom Evans as in the ultra running Tom Evans? (well his grandad at least).

So with the gyms closed I’m going to spend lockdown running a bit more. Still doing the strength training at home with the kettlebells but I wouldn’t mind seeing where I can get my 5km time to over the next 3 months.
Having really only run 2/3 times a week (Max) since last October’s marathon i will be hard pushed to bother my pb but it will be interesting to see how it goes as I’ve never really tried since I got the Vaporfly. I think I ran around 18.26 in last lockdown. I’m still the same weight but haven’t run a great deal over the summer. Start of challenge Time trial tomorrow… I’m dreading the final number I’d be happy with anything 18.xx but pretty sure it will be 19.xx :grimacing:

Yeah i tried that yesterday afternoon on a similar grounding as what you’ve just explained (but cycling instead of strength).

As per the training thread, I got 3.5km in and then spectacularly blew up! :joy:

So if you just get to 5km you’ll be doing better than me already! :joy: :joy:

Will keep an eye out for benchmark effort #1 bud.

You’d think the difference between 3.50/km and 3.40/km should be indiscernible … :joy::joy:

It’s not far off a lot of quicker runners half and full marathon differences. Run twice as long for just 10 seconds per km…
