Sub-3 Marathon Thread

The Wiggle one?
I was targeting that for a 77, when I could be arsed to train

I’ve basically had the last 4 months off and so starting to feel some motivation for the harder sessions and longer runs (though admittedly a few weeks too late) so know how you feel

Was planning on Boston next year as had a qualifying time but think I’m going to sign up for an IM instead and focus on that instead of another marathon… in which case will do Boston the following year. Also seeing the hotel costs put me off slightly.

From what I’m told, the challenge of Boston (versus proper flat road races…) is that the ascent is all towards the end of the race as you’re tiring and with sore quads from the previous descent early on. That, and the variable weather which goes from extreme to extreme each year

Yes, the Wiggle one, did you enter as I think it’s closed or full now?

77 is well beyond me but I’m wondering if I can get 1:26 or under and if I have a decent few weeks get anywhere near my PB of 1:24:50, that will be a long shot though.

I’m re-finding my run mojo now that the tri season has gone and I can combine running for fun on the moors with a few tougher sessions or parkrun.

Thanks goldenboots, I’m expecting hotel’s to be pricey but hopefully I can book something soon and I’m planning to move down the NW corridor towards Washington DC as a holiday.

I did look at any 70.3’s but the one I might have done has been cancelled, the others a week or two either side are miles away like Texas. I really don’t fancy training for a full IM over there as it will be during our winter, and TBH I wasn’t really feeling the love for IM training this year.

I’ve seen the profile and yes, the climbing seems to kick in around mile 18 I think for about 5 miles before more descending to sea level at the finish.

I’ve done April marathon’s and moved onto IM’s during the summer in the past so still have that option depending on which one I do and any aims I have for it, there’s a lure of the Ironman event but less so the training, and as Hewligan said on his Wales report, I really can’t get into swimming these days, I was fairly solid 66 IM swim but recently down to 1:12 and below which leaves too much on the bike\run if you are chasing any time or place.

Good luck with any Ironman.

Thanks - it’s over 4 years since my last triathlon so looking forward to getting back in to it.

Wouldn’t expect much in terms of tri racing on the north east coast that early in the year unfortunately. I’ve been in NYC since February this year and it was still pretty nippy until April with frequent snow throughout March - looks like it will be a lot of indoor training until May I reckon unfortunately.

What number come back will this be?!

haha, I would say only comeback no.2 - the first two comebacks weren’t technically comebacks as they were consistent seasons out due to injury!

But it’s probably the 10th time I have said I am going to get back in to triathlon :grinning:

I didn’t enter in the end, no.
I’d not bothered to do the training, have put on 9lbs since the HM in March, so am feeling lardy.
Also, the course, in my opinion, is uninspired and not Manchester at all. But, I used those roads to commute in on the bike, so probably just bored of them.

I’m still on for October 20th so kind of peaking now at circa 80k a week. This is week 14 of the 18 I scheduled … 2 were wiped out because of illness and holidays and 1 was another holiday with just 25 miles but otherwise everything has gone well.
Have run 20 miles x3 and hope to get another 2 in. It’s getting harder now the kids are back playing football!!!
This is the best I’ve felt about a marathon tbh and I’m getting a fair bit in now at sub3 pace. I’m a bit scared but I should probably try and run one of these remaining 20s inside 2h17…

I’m hoping to get a qualifying time for NYC next year although Boston is very tempting too. I could mix either with a work trip in theory. Think i’ll be too late for Boston 2020 though…

I’m not on for an Autumn marathon now. Just a massive amount of lethargy combined with too much on at work so not in the mood to put pressure on myself for a good time. Did a 70 mile run on the Norfolk coast a few weeks ago and have a 35 mile run on a long distance footpath planed for this weekend (neither of these are events - just a run for fun). Will still follow on here, and hopefully get some speed mojo back soon

Which Marathon? I’m doing the Yorkshire Marathon on 20th October.

My prep is way off, I managed 75km 2 weeks ago, last week only 36km :grimacing: Hoping to push it back up to 60km this week, so my countdown is as follows:

  • 16/9: 60km with 16km long run
  • 23/9: 80km - 21km mile long run
  • 30/9: 100km - 30km mile long run (5km steady, 20km marathon pace or over/unders, 5km steady)
  • 7/10: Taper week
  • 14/10: Race week

I’m running Chelmsford in Essex… if all goes to plan i’m planning

16/9 87km with 20 mile marathon paced run. maybe.
23/9 85km 20 miles easy
30/9 65km 10km race
taper week, race week…

Training has gone surprisingly according to plan this year but like i said… kids footy, i expect the next few weeks to be disrupted,

27 mile long run thru the middle of the night this past weekend - started at 1am and ran from the Bronx to Coney Island in NYC (ala The Warriors) at 1am. Had planned to use it as a good training run and run a relatively decent pace (had hoped for 8:30/mile or so).

Problem was this was after drinking in the pub all day/evening beforehand, and so I could only run this pace for 10 miles or so before horrendous stomach issues took over… It turned the next 17 miles in to a horrible death march looking for toilet opportunities wherever possible.

Lowest point of the night was probably having to find a lorry to crawl underneath for some ‘privacy’ just down the road from Times Square at 3am! :flushed:

Topped out for a 64 miles though for the week, and 5 weeks left before my Autumn marathon. Hopefully start to bring some speed now for the next few weeks.

Why on earth would you do that to yourself???

I was thinking it sounds like a wicked little adventure!!

Haha, that was my thinking. It was a semi-organised event which sounded like a bit of fun. Was cool to get to the beach and watch sunrise

After 3 weeks of abstinence i’d be well up for all day in the pub. And running borough to borough in NYC sounds cool. I’d just prefer to do them a few days apart. And the other way round.
Anyway… week 15 of 18 of operation sub 3. Another tough finish to the weekend’s 20 miler. I think i’m doing one more which will take me to 5 x 20 milers, more than i’d normally do. There is light at the end of the tunnel, taper just around the corner and i’m almost over the hump of my 7 weeks no drinking. Still weigh 67kg. Must stop eating.

How has the pace been on those longer runs?

I’ve only managed 1 x 20+ and will probably only get one more in. Race is 5 weekends on Sunday, so 3 training weekends left, and I am away this weekend and the next weekend. Oh well…

Wake up early and get some miles in. I travel a lot and I just get up early and get something done. Not glamorous, not necessarily fun at the time (although often it is), but I always feel brilliant afterwards. Does mean I tend to go to bed a touch earlier though, which may not work depending on why you are travelling.

It shouldn’t be too bad, a Monday to Wednesday conference in San Diego (I’m sure there are worse places to run). 8am start time is a bit annoying but finish early enough each day so probably just double up most days and see the coast near to the hotel. I’m by myself as well so no colleagues to force me to be sociable in the evenings.

Looking forward to a long run on Sunday morning as I’m going a couple of days early - just got to stay out of the pub on Saturday night (or repeat last weekend’s run as above!)
