Swimming for Hammers and Spoons

I know you can bury your head and “press the buoy” too much, so you need to play around with it as previously mentioned. If your arse is getting cold from sticking out of the water then balance must be about right.

I’ve been thinking about my stroke over the last few weeks after hitting a plateau last year - I think generally my body position isn’t too bad, head is ok, legs aren’t too low and generally I keep them together - I don’t kick much but I don’t think it’s too much of a hinderance - I do think my main limiter is that I swim pretty flat and I don’t rotate as well as I could do.

Did a load of 636 drill on Monday which I think could help me. I’m at the pool again tonight and will do more. I also don’t breath bilaterally and I found that naturally helped with that too

Fins

Wore them to take pressure off the shoulder today, it was a decent workout.

Got me thinking - is it worth adding fins to a whole session occasionally?

Strengthen the kick? Reduce susceptibility to cramps at least?

I reckon Solar Energie’s 0 arms - swim drill might help with that too. A bit like the unco drill. I am always learning from that drill. I always used to do 2x 100m of that as part of my warm up but have just added back in after a long gap without doing it much.

What if I literally cannot float and keep my legs up?

Same for me, legs just sink.

Triathlon probably isn’t for ^^^ you ^^^ two then.

Will have a look at that one - tried unco the other day too - it’s bloody hard!

The first time i see this i nearly walked out  this guy was a crossfit type, 1% BF  well looked like it, and literally sank like a stone. I first recommended he eat some cakes, but we improved slowly by filling lungs and working on small flutter kicks , pushing down on chest, locking the core in. Cakes would still have been easier and more successful though.

Shame there isnt a version of tri with just cycling and running , they’d be quite good at that

Try swimming with your toes pointing to the floor/up towards your shins and report back. It’s like putting the brakes on immediately.

If you can’t tell the difference then theres good odds your ankles are so stiff you’re pointing the wrong way all the time. It’s one of the biggest giveaways whether someone swam or ran as a kid

Local swim club tonight. Shoulder not good. Was bad idea. Nice to finally get to one though.

Watched the youth squad - man they really kick hard. Should I be emulating that?

Where did you swim?

hard kicking is best for 200 or below, distance swimming it’s more about balance but by learning to kick like a sprinter you will improve power which means you can use less energy when distance swimming.
