Swimming for Hammers and Spoons

Yes!

“Evening Bob, another swim?”

Now I know this is just a small gym in bumfucknowhere, but really, those are words you never want to hear! A reputation as a swimmer? :scream:

“Mhairi” I replied. “If anyone should ever ask, I went to the gym, ok?!”

Quite a lot of rest off 2min I think, but happy to be consistent low 1:30s

Road to 100 x 100m - week 8

7000m in total

60 x 100m off 2:00 but steady

Aim was to keep under sub 60 min IM pace, so kept it at 1:34 and below

Then form started to really suffer so switched to 50m off 1:00 pull and paddles coming in under 45

20 of those down

£15 annual membership plus £9 to swim in the docks next Tuesday with the company. I want to go but fuck me.

I’ll never use nowca membership again. Mine expired six years ago.

I guess being in London, they have quite a few sites. So the membership has historically got use. It sine KF those that once you’ve paid for it, it motivates you to keep going. As a one off swim though, I agree it makes a swim excessively expensive. That said, I’ve swam at now a sites all over the country. They do have decent span.

I personally really like the docks. One of the best OW training venues I’ve swam at, altho the facilities are pretty much nonexistent.

If I can get back to regular swimming, I’d love to do a 10k but I really dislike the fact they require a tow float. Otherwise I’d do it there. It’s a shame they’ve switched to a two lapper versus year one which was all the way into a second dock, but given I’ve done a 5k Swimathon in a pool, I can’t really complain that 2x5k would be boring.

It’s so expensive though, for what it is.

Yes, apparently I need to buy one as well.

I’ve signed up for Tuesday, I want to test Form + Garmin as well as encourage the troops.

10k I’ll do one day but probably in the pool as I can’t be arsed with these “lottery” ticket entries.

Sea swims are generally tough, but I suppose 10k is at least free and whenever you want there. Return ticket to eastbourne and fish and chips afterwards :+1:

Meet me at the pool one day this week, or pop round and borrow mine

When are you there?

I’m at Walnuts at 4:30-6 today. Docks are on Tuesday…

Dont even notice it most of the time, although you cant do the “corkscrew turn” with it

Biggin Hill tonight but there tomorrow , 7.30-9

Just to swim? That’s new. It’s previously just been a recommendation for normal swim sessions, but was never obligatory

Might be able to meet you tomorrow night, I’ll PM you. Thanks for the offer, either way.

Got ready for swim club, didn’t notice the rain. Buses are fucked for the summer, so I was going to cycle, can’t be fucked with it, stood at the bus stop in vain hope but arse… Damn it.

Think I’m going to cancel with Ojays. I have to pick one, and Ojays takes my Sunday afternoon. Should have done it last month, now I have to pay for a month I won’t use as they’re taking a two week break.

Was given a loaner tow float. Never used one before and successfully ignored it.

Open water Form goggles took ages to set up, I had to run through the instructions twice before it started working which was a bit annoying as I was already delayed by other people.

By default it gave heart rate and distance, which is basically useless feedback imo. Stroke rate is not an option for some reason…Ibe played around and it should give me pace/100m next time:

I’m not convinced the distance is reliable yet. The 366m lap should have been at least 400m, and pace seems really slow.

Still. It was nice to try out ahead of Sunday, and practice sighting again.

The distance is just coming from your watch, so FORM has no control over that. Short swim loops always pose a challenge for a GPS watch.

Docks seem to change their layout of loops all the time, but I’ve always had the short loops under distance

And it did give me live pace yesterday. :+1:

Question is whether it helped or not?

Distance was off in both swims, which I suspected so when I saw values I added a few seconds. Both starts displayed around 1:27-1:30 in the first several hundred metres and slowly ticked up towards 1:50. In reality I averaged 1:44/100 in both events so I think some of the slowest paces displayed were a bit too slow as well.

Both events felt easier on the way out, which I usually put down to exuberance and the melee with other swimmers but this time I’m pretty sure the wind and chop was against on the way back. It felt a lot harder yet was a lot slower.

I checked my form and tried to increase my
Pace but it seems to have had no effect.

Stroke rate recorded as 33, so 66spm both average and slowest. Doesn’t look like I got it above 70 after the start where I’d expect 1:33-1:40 in the pool.
