Swimming for Hammers and Spoons

Had a good sess this morning. 15x100m off 1m50 with the bleeper at 22s in the 25m pool.

Hitting 100m after 1m28s, 22 rest, and then go again.

It felt pretty manageable, whereas previously I might have had to string out the rest intervals a little as the set went on. Perhaps swimming a little more is paying off after all

That’s 10km for the Fri-fri week so I may need to go again later to notch up 12km

edit: nope, went for a run instead.

I used a pull-buoy for all my swimming in the pool when I did IM/DIM. Never worried about the leg kick. Kept me in a better position, and most importantly saved the legs for the bike and run.

There was a bit of pb work in our session last night. Normally it’s easy swimming when the pbs come out but last night was threshold. 3 lots of 6 so roughly 200 x 3 - awful. Hate the pb

We’re doing CSS training for this 6 week block, I’m going off CSS of 1:35 so 24s/length. We did:
1x 100
4x 200
2x 300
2x 400

With 1 beep (24s) rest until the 2nd 300 then 2 beep rests.

This was wk2 with longer interval progression (think wk 1 had 4x 100’s to start) so I’m guessing next week will be 3x400’s at the end.
I was pretty spangled at the end of the session, manageable but tough, the last 100 of the last 400 got a little scrappy.

Straight out of the Sutton school of coaching - he used to advocate double pull-buoys for his athletes.

FWIW - I’ve always used a pull buoy in a pool as well

Problem is, it becomes a crutch if used too much and the primary reasons for the poor body position and kick are not addressed. You then get 90% of people panicking when the swim becomes non wetsuit.

I used to, but even if you aren’t convinced of the benefits of kicking, I think it makes for a better, more varied workout to use the buoy only occasionally.

Fins seem to be a much bigger thing for swimmers.

Amen

Never swim faster than when I see a fin

Great for drills to keep body position good and speed up, brilliant for speed training, help with kick strength and ankle mobility. Only thing I’ve learnt over time is open healed as they are much lighter. Arena Powerfins are the go to for most now.

I’d add a snorkel to list of kit requirements as well.

Couple of times I have tried to use a snorkel, I breath water in through my nose. Need to spend a bit more time getting used to it, or use a nose clip.

I really like the snorkel but rarely use it. Man, everything is soooo much easier. Except the turns.

Formswim have emailed me to say I will get 5% quicker in just 21.2 weeks…what’s odds I’ll swim 3/wk for that long?

or you could invest that time into developing your stroke…

Personally I’d try to do as little as possible with my legs in the pool, so the legs were fresh for the run and bike interval sessions. More to be gained there. I used the PullB for every swim session and could still do 55min/IM and 120min/DIM. Agree though, it’s better if you’re sure it’s a wetsuit swim. Pool sprint tries were not my favourite lol

Is there a good source for jammers £10-20 range?

Allens, Simply Swim, Pro swimwear, Swimpath, no doubt Ive used Amazon also.

Speedo endurance jammers, or the cheap arena ones. Funky Trunks are the go to for most swimmers as they are really funky  and last forever even with daily wear but cost a few quid over the others

Speedo Endurance plus are 50% off at Sports Direct, I had a couple of pairs delivered yesterday.

Too much on my mind, left the house for work, went to the pool, got naked and realised I had no trunks. Considered swimming naked.

Then thought my existing jammers may be wearing thin so went shopping and couldn’t find any. Shit trunks at M&S I would never use again etc.

I’ve an emergency towel, goggles, trunks & earplugs in a small bag in the car for exactly that scenario, not good getting up at 5am, driving 40 mins to the pool & realising you’ve forgot your trunks. Needed it more than I’d like to admit.

Don’t you wear your trunks to the pool at 5am?

I have forgotten underwear for after swimming, but at least I can still swim.

How do you keep on top of the replenishment process though. That’s where I’d fall down!

The bzckup would only be useful once! :joy:
