Swimming for Hammers and Spoons

Did 200m kick today, that was painfully slow, around 51s/length.

Given I saw it yesterday when digging out the quotes above, H was pretty cutting back when I said similar…

Ha, that’s going back a bit! I know my kick is sh!t as literally anyone else in the pool including soccer moms are faster. My immense upper body must make up for it. Luckily (in this respect) I have skinny calves so my legs are not sinky.

Think I’m up about 6min / 200 at the moment but it’s in WU so not gunning

It’s one thing I notice in my Friday masters swim, the lane above me can all kick much better than everybody in my lane. They weren’t all swim kids either, there’s even a triathlete in there :astonished:

I am just re-evaluating my swim training as the improvement in my swimming over the last couple of years didn’t translate to faster triathlon swims and I have very much plateaued in the pool. I am going through the 100 v Oly swim thread on TT 1.0 and trying to pick up all the nuggets in there.

That largely describes me as well.

Not so many years ago, my benchmark set going into the season was 20x100 off 1:45 (swimming them in ~1:30). I’m struggling to swim a single 1:30 these days; and my perception is that my training has changed little…but has it I wonder?

i bet your mobility has reduced a bit in the last year or two. Im assuming you are less “mobile” during the day than when you were playing soldiers? or was you desk bound then. Still mobility can be an issue as we age, tightness around the shoulders and upper back. Loads of good mobility stuff, probably on the Swim England site or look at swimswam which may have ideas also

Desk bound in my later years, so it’s probably a combination of ageing and something in my training that’s not immediately obvious (to me).

Training yesterday 1800m of kicking and balance drills. I was much better towards the end, but can I hold onto it?

do some sprinting in sessions also, add some fins as well and really fly. If you can get down to 17 seconds per 25 off say 45 seconds. Add some work , 50’s off 50 or even 60 to start holding 40 for as long as you can then start building back up the distances / reducing the rest

lol just been “told off” by Discourse for posting more than 20% of replies to this thread and maybe i should give others space to add to the conversation :joy: FFS its a triathlon site and a post on swimming, no one wants to join in

MAMILs talk about swimming?

How is IMJ doing today?

MAMIS you mean

I don’t even wear budgie smugglers any more; I reckon that was the beginning of my decline…

Marginal gains

very well, Dan pissed some bloke off and a few joined in. You should join him  @Matthew_Spooner tried to defend Dan with a very reasoned post. I just had to get it off my chest. Its a fucking race, it’s not about just finishing in 16:59:59, unless you are really racing to get that time like Lou Hollander or Sister Madonna Buder.

I think I was allowed 36h to complete the 405k ride last year; sod that, I was done in 19h which included about 2.5h to feed my face in cafes :yum:
