The bikepacking and cycle touring thread

And another, similar option. A bit further at 400kms though. But a sweet map line.

Clearly the Doon will pace you to south Wales on that route

I’m guessing a bit more elevation on the Wales route than you encountered last year. Still planning 1 day / non stop?

The south coast route is really crying out for a gravel bike along the South Downs Way.

Yeah that would be the plan. We didn’t rush last year and stopped for meals and stuff, so would take a similar approach I think.

None of us own any grav, so that would knock that idea unfortunately (as well as being too slow, and we’d have to turn it into a multi dayer).

Though I was pretty useless for a couple of days after due to the tiredness last time anyway! :joy: :joy:.

As a rule I tend to cycle west & get lost about 30miles south of Wrexham :upside_down_face: .

Having said that, my longest one dayer was Wrexham to Cardiff before getting the train back.

2 of the 4 of us had done it before & coincidentally we had the same ticket inspector as they had. He was asking after “Kev the Hedge”…Kev had missed a corner & left the road on a previous trip :joy:  :joy:

Just checked, I’m doing a Coast to Coast (Seascale to Whitby) on 22/06 which I think is the weekend following the June solstice.

This will be good training

Fish and chips in Whitby before cycling home :joy:

Looks cracking, mate! I’m hoping to do the Bryan Chapman 600k audax, which is a length of Wales and return event. Hmmm, might see about getting an entry in.

The Bryan Chapman doesn’t work for me, unfortunately. I’ve entered the Kingston Wheelers’ Amesbury Amble 300 (first audax I did 7 years ago and I’ve ridden it twice independently; it’s a lovely route) and the Dauntsey Dawdle 400. Will see how that goes and might think about their Wander Wye 600.

Well the first half of the route is very much in my territory and I have cycled back to Chester from the south just this September by one of the best routes I’ve ever done.

I’ve also done a great route from the Severn bridge north which I can look up.

Will upload tomorrow when I can search them out.

Are you going on the Chester Tri trip or just coincidence?

Aye, I was invited along. Are you doing it?

No, helped with a bit of the planning but did it in 2018 so once the sportif was chosen for the route, I was never going to do it (had hoped for a route going further north).

It’s a great day out but there’s a lot of travelling and faffing about which I don’t want to go through again!

Looking at your idea, I realise that my routes all veer a bit too much into Wales and would add miles and ascent. However, there’s not much in the way of obstacles like motorways and cities to go round on the direct route, so finding a good, quiet route won’t be hard.
My main quibble would be that you’ll be going through the Shropshire hills in the dark, which is a real shame and makes me wonder why you’d bother going all that way to not see the scenery?

Looking at the route I did from Chepstow to Hereford it’s not very direct (towards Usk and then back to Monmouth and a final zigzag to Hereford). It was a club trip so not my route - I’d go through the Wye valley personally.

I need more bikepacking pictures here please; even if it’s old pics of your set-ups.

You mean pictures of the bike?

Here’s mine from September:

2 litre camelback as well. I’ve seen people squeeze bottles under the frame bag but unsure how you’d get them out of the cage.

Turns out I’m going to Northern Ireland for a long weekend in May to cycle the north coast with some friends.

Have also mapped a 4 day trip to explore more of mid Wales (the days in mid Wales will be loops from a B&B, so no bikepacking kit).

We’ve just booked a few days near Tywyn for Easter. Though there’ll be no cycling unfortunately. Hopefully a bit of running though.
