The bikepacking and cycle touring thread

And 835€ more expensive :face_with_peeking_eye::winking_face_with_tongue:
But yeah, they are easier!

Strines is a proper stretch of Tarmac :oncoming_fist:, bet Winnets wasn’t fun though fully loaded.
Sounds like a good test of kit & a mini adventure.

I did the broken road, with some walking, as CBA with Mam Nick adding a few km on :joy:

Also (this isn’t at you!) I’ve used the Ortlieb fork pack straps (good for 10kg!) to mount some bottle cages to my forks. Wonder if they’ll hold now :joy::see_no_evil_monkey:
(Also need some new cages, but these’ll do for now)

First of a couple of audaxes tomorrow, both are only ~100k but the one next week has something like 1500M vert and heads up to Tan Hill Inn before a trip up the stang for anyone that follows the 100 climbs.

Tomorrow’s is a largely flat route from York to Knaresborough and back via Borough Bridge.

Doing both with a friend who is training for IM Cascais so won’t be out to batter it, unless she tries to put the hammer down :grimacing:

But then…

Sorry I know I’m late to the party. What was that set-up for?

Isn’t that why you look spare tubes?

Good price. Would you recommend? My daughter has been using my original Thermarest Ultralight 3/4 mat (similar weight) but she’s been moaning about it. She’s got DofE Silver assessment in Sept.

I remember someone on TT1.0 whose son complained that his PX50 wheels flexed too much during CX & @Poet to his credit said something like his son should buy his own chuffing wheels.

I would, yes. The AlpKit stuff I have is brilliant :see_no_evil_monkey:
Not a showy brand, but it just all works.
It’s a bit large and not the lightest, but it’s comfy.

Thermarest :exploding_head:
You posh down there, man :money_with_wings:

Spare tubes and sealant is a ball ache. Just such a mess. Really, I should’ve turned round and gone back to the Langsett Cycle Cafe (from the TdF - polka dot painted) and used their track pump. I’d have spotted the massive thorn, too, then :woman_shrugging:t2::face_with_symbols_on_mouth:

Setup was for Dales Divide.
Which I DNFd through a sense of humour failure.
I probably needed 45–50mm tyres and less kit.
The first 100km are properly heavy going and more suited to an MTB.

I don’t really enjoy a 15kmh average ride - which is what that was.

I was single when I bought the thermarest

This was a great film. I hate camping but I will do it if the surf spots are remote enough.

I know this is a race but it kind of fits here as well. It looks amazing.

Where I parked for my run yesterday is quite a popular spot for wild campers, anyway, I parked next to an original VW campervan yesterday and saw the bloke getting his bike out which was setup for touring. I don’t actually think he was sleeping in the VW as it wasn’t really set up like that but it did get me thinking of having some kind of van to stick my bike in for a weekend away.

Probably never happen mind.

But he had an ingenious idea for a cup\bottle holder with a couple of bike bottle cages on a plate and screwed into the dashboard :exploding_head:

We keep talking about getting a tent box for the car - chucking the bikes in the back and heading to Europe . Although we have no off road parking , so not sure how safe the tent box would be permanently on top of the car..

I like the idea of a VW Caddy or Transit connect with the higher roof.

I’d never be without a van. It makes carrying sports kit and motorbikes easy. It’s a changing tent, it’s a sleeping cabin, somewhere to sit out of the rain, somewhere to cook and eat and easy to clean out mud and debris. Vans these days are super comfortable for long distances with similar spec interiors as cars. Honestly, it’s the second best thing I own I think.

What have you got?

Transit - with an impressive amount of cup holders as standard. None of this tacky VW bolting cycle cages to the dash malarkey :slightly_smiling_face:

Haha, in fairness it was an original VW and quite possibly as old as me, also probably in better condition :grimacing::joy:

Even had the spare wheel on the front.

It was engineering ingenuity
