I’m not surprised they didn’t get the most welcoming response from the crowd when up against the rest of that lineup!
Is there an over 60s thread?
(I’ve just noticed this thread has an apostrophe in this thread title, maybe that’s why I can’t find it. YAG.)
A few years time and we’ll just rename it!
I age up to the 60-64 ag next year, might even do a tri to celebrate.
See, that’s what I’m thinking. I’ve done 59 triathlon/race whatnots and I’ll be 60 in two years. Seems a reasonable target as long as there’s Ovaltine at the finish.
I do that in cafes when I’ve left my glasses in the car. Sometimes I ask LO to read something to me and I get ‘the look’ ![]()
I used the magnifier app on my phone for that when I don’t have my cheapo reading glasses to hand.
I was always short sighed (-3.5 ish) and had contacts since I was 16. I was fine until about 51, then switched to multifocal contacts, which were always a bit meh. Then this year I’ve switched to monovision, reading in left eye, distance in right eye which is fab. I can’t easily read my work screens though, so I bought a pair of cheap +1 reading glasses and poked out the left lens! Works ok over my contacts for the screens, and I’m ok elsewhere without.
What
I increasingly need this!
It’s a built in app. You can add it to the “control screen” as well so you just swipe down from the top right of the screen and can access it there.
That’s witchcraft ![]()

Couple of questions?
Has anyone else started noticing you don’t tolerate the heat and especially racing in it as you get older? I used to be alright but pretty hit and miss these days, sometimes alright and it’s hard to know if last weekends problems were the heat or feeling sick from the breakfast, or a combination. I probably don’t help myself by overdressing sometimes as I don’t like the idea of getting sunburnt. I was using the sponges and trying to drink to help keep cool. But I’ve coped better with warmer races in the past.
I have an increasingly narrow racing temperature range, especially in triathlon. Running is less of a problem, I can keep warm as long as I keep going but get really cold very quickly afterwards, although that is nothing new.
Also, recovering after a long hard race, today just feels lethargic and almost a hangover without the alcohol or headache. Again, not sure if I dehydrated myself too much or not enough calorie intake but did try to get some calories and fluid in afterwards. And it never felt like a really hard effort, it always used to take a few days to get over a marathon but this is certainly slower than it was. I had well over 9 hours sleep as well last night.
You have been putting in some significant efforts recently - perhaps reign it in a bit this week?
Yeah, not planning on anything major so I don’t upset the hamstring.
Yep
Most of my training is 1 km t mill repeats for hyrox this year
So hot hot hot !
But the races are the same very warm that’s why we run around naked ! I’m finding that my hr can be 162 ish yet I’m not breathing that heavy, it’s because I’m so warm
Need a plan for the longer stuff next year
Just gained another ring on the trunk, now 52.
Think it’s time to accept I’m probably past the half way mark and on the home leg. From what I can see, the chance of a man aged 52 living to 100 is somewhere between 2% and 6%, and then the chance of a man aged 100 living to 104 is similarly low (around 5%).
Maybe that will change a bit over the next few decades- telomere extensions, regenerative neural links, robot exoskeletons to help the ailing joints etc etc. But even if it does, more time to get bitten by a Portuguese Man O War when swimming off Durdle Door, so doesn’t mean much in the scheme of things.
Well, I’m an optimist, and so am going to give 105 my best shot. Will obviously probably fail, the odds are stacked against as above, but here are the top 10 things that I’m doing in preparation:
- exercise every day but not too much
- keep BMI in range 21-22 (nothing special about those numbers, but this is my current BMI so maintaining it implies not gaining or losing too much weight)
- keep BP below 120/80 (work definitely has other ideas)
- keep a lid on the Fossies (work ditto) and sugar
- avoid swimming anywhere where there has been a shark sighting in living memory
- eat mostly veggy
- sunscreen (horse may have bolted over the last 3 years though)
- keep cholesterol below 4 and non-HDL below 2.5
- drive as little as possible, walk and ride or catch the train in preference
- inflation-link them retirement funds
Haven’t really researched it much, this is just common sense stuff off top of head. Anyone else got any suggestions?
Anyway, your good health, ladies and gentlemen ![]()
Happy birthday old chap.
I need to become more socially engaged. I get frustrated at how isolated I appear to be getting as I age.
Happy birthday, fruity ![]()
that cake must be getting full and increasingly a fire risk, have you done a H&S risk assessment for it ![]()
Don’t forget sleep! I’d like to get my BMI down but my body shape isn’t the same as yours or doon, and fat remains low. BP as well.
I kind of embrace solitude but know I should socialise a bit more!
How about some strength work, muscle retention is a major factor in health!
