And significantly less cool.

Now if only there were other races in the Southwest that were even harder (or easier depending on which you pick) but infinitely more low key and :sunglasses:.

Despite me never actually finishing it, the NC110km is my favourite race.

Apart from ā€˜stiffing us’ with parking at Ivybridge College last year at DiaD, he gets everything right at his races.

It’s hard to imagine a better combo of being small enough to care about everyone and experienced enough to know what’s needed and cover all bases.

By far my favourite race org :+1:

I’m very biased as he’s a close friend. But to his credit, he takes criticism on the chin and is always looking to improve. He canvasses opinion on new ideas and ways of doing things rather than existing in his own little bubble.

Not going to get everything right every time of course. And some people just make a living out of complaining and/or have a complete inability to shoulder any personal responsibility.

They’re deliberately low key. You won’t get bells and whistles. But that’s the whole point.

NC110 looks great. It’s a great section of coast!

Race clash this year, but one for the future.

Interesting, that even a low key race like this, still heavily advertise the fact they are a UTMB index race. It shows the draw of the brand. Presumably, they paid for that privilege?

No it was free if I recall as a micro business. And was really driven by people actively asking for it. Got a bit of European traffic from the itra website as a result, but not a huge amount. But that was before the utmb stuff got tied down with the stones and their own sanctioned events etc vs just collecting points for races that just had to be verified as a) real and b) long/hard enough.

I wonder whether races will pull away from linking with UTMB with all the negativity in tbe sport.

Tbh i don’t have a strong opinion about UTMB either way. Never done one of their races, so don’t feel i can judge.

I tend to go by whether the individual race appeals. I’m not a great fan of Ironman, but IM Wales is one of my favourite races!

I didn’t have a problem with UTMB but the tie in with Ironman and that business model has definitely annoyed some people.

I kind of get some of it but it would be hypocritical given I do Ironman triathlons :joy:

More curiosity than anything else but has anyone done any LDWA events?

Not personally but a few people have, get the impression they are fairly low key but friendly.

I was looking at one event randomly and it said ā€˜Runners Start at 9.00’ so I guess they have run options as well?

Quite a few do I think, there’s one our local mountain rescue run in a few weeks which has an option for running without being really competitive.

I’ve done a few as a walker and as a runner (two weeks ago A Coventry Way was under LDWA rules), low key friendly events. They sometime don’t publish results, just a list of finishers, or if they do they order them by clock time, you get a finishers certificate and maybe a patch for your knapsack.
Checkpoints are often tea and biscuits rather than gels and energy drink. Often have some good grub at the finish though.

SInce they are designed mainly for walkers, they need to start the runners later so they don’t get to the checkpoints before they are set up !

I guess they are the ultra version of an audax. A bit of a different crowd, often older, but friendly.

Cheers Doug, might check an event out just for something different.

Enjoy !

Sometimes checkpoints are unmanned and you need to find the clip or stamp to mark your card, might need to read the instructions to find them !

Anglezarke Amble in Lancashire.
Loved it, proper grass routes stuff from town hall setup and the checkpoints, I must have gained weight that day I ate so much  Super friendly and didn’t need a mortgage to enter

Sooo I have made it to Auburn for the Canyons 100km. Not a great run up to it - went out running last Wednesday morning and tripped up over a kerb I have been up at least a 1000 times smashed my knees up which don’t quite feel right still . I woke up last Thursday morning with a fever and felt terrible , did a covid test which was negative but realised I probably have flu. 2 days in bed and then the flight where I got through on paracetamol and a handful of sleep . Have basically rested up and then did a test run on Wednesday along no hands bridge. I will be toeing the start line tomorrow at 5:00Am ( we are 8 hours behind). The first two cut offs are tight - and there is a fair bit of ascent so head down and get on with it . I’ll be happy once I get through them ( they have extended the cut off time slightly due to the amount of people getting in touch). I am race number 1499 if you fancy any dot watching. Weather was hot at the beginning of the week - much cooler now and was raining yesterday and today - supposed to be dry tomorrow. Looking forward to getting on the trails whatever happens
