Trail & Ultra Running Thread

haha yeah, I remember the pain of Porlock Weir beach at the North Coast 50!

Has anyone done the Wooler Trail Marathon. It popped up on FB as targeted ad

2km of vert, mid-November, properly t’north so possibility of some tasty weather. 40 notes to enter. I am tempted.

Always sells out, but there’s always tons of spots going. You’ve just got to get lucky with the right place right time.

I’ll keep an eye out with friends’ pages. one of my mates gave away a spot a few hours ago … if only you’d have posted earlier!!

The pebbles don’t last too long. They sometimes water the course a tad to make it proper mucky … but having been out on part of the route recently, and with the rain due in this weekend, that’s not going to be a problem!

Have a look at this … i think it’s a better race: http://www.sidmouthrunningclub.co.uk/jps-exe-to-axe-2020/

Cheers mate, really keen for it. Why the high withdraw rate I wonder?

Can’t do the one on the 5th April as we are on holiday in Putsborough.

It’s a ballot to get in. So everyone (local) will chuck their name in on the off chance they get a spot. If they do, they all know it’s super easy to ship off their place if they get injured/busy/change their mind etc.

It’s a pretty bog event for a local trail race to be fair. Most of my lot go for the lower key Exe to Axe or 4 trigs (cancelled last weekend due to the winds) as they all share parts of the routes.

No, but it’s a nice part of the world up in Northumberland, shame it is in November as the beaches & coast up there are excellent. Bamburgh, Holy Island etc.

So I bottled the big one at Tarawera, and ā€œonlyā€ ran the 100k again.

I just was not feeling ā€œitā€ before and have half an eye on London marathon. I only needed to complete it in 17 hours for a WS ballot place.
Anyway completed it an hour slower than last year, despite not wanting to race it, was surprised I was that much slower especially as I thought I had run the technical/uphill sections better than last year.
At the end I felt rather meh about it and had decided that is likely my last big ultra. Anyhow 1 week later and I get a message that I am off the waitlist for the backyard relaps ultra. https://www.lacticturkey.co.nz/riverheadbackyardrelaps/backyardrelapsultra/ Basically a 7k lap every hour on the hour until last man standing

Went and checked out the course at the weekend, enjoyed it and have entered. So a whole world of pain coming up in 5ish weeks.

What I am not sure about is the strava etiquette for these races? Do I save each lap as a seperate run? I hope to have a 10 minute break between each lap so I wouldnt want to keep the watch running…

I do love a good 180 turn! :joy:

I’ve seen these types of races. Nearly entered one last year as I was quite intrigued by the format. So you’re going to try to start slow and even lap them then? I guess every 4 hours or so, at least at the start, you could do a slightly quicker one to get a bit more time to eat and refresh/toilet break etc. How long are you aiming for?

Good question on strava! I’d be tempted to just leave my watch running the whole time. Lap it, then pause it each lap. Your garmin should go into power saver mode during the rests. And you can use that time to charge it as well, saves running around with your watch on a battery pack. Otherwise it all gets a bit ā€˜lost’. Juts my thoughts though.

Yep, it is the format that interests me, hence the u-turn, just the one though

Looking at last years results, it was won by a lady, who started at 50 mins and finished at 50 mins. The others at the top seemed to start at 45 and slowly drop down to 58+

I ran the course very comfortably in 45, though I ran the hills that I will walk on the day, so I suspect around 50 minutes. What is interesting is the first 2k is single track and there will be 130+ for the first few laps so I suspect it will be hard to maintain a steady lap pace to start with as I imagine the first k could be a race to the front or a walk at the back.

I am hoping this may be where my insomnia is an advantage right? Back in the day I had no probs staying up all night on the pop without any chemical assistance, so should be easy right…

I just watched this, found it very interesting, he is a very driven guy!

I enjoyed that cheers.
I couldn’t quite workout the format of the laps. Are they different each time but take in the same sections like rat jaw and the fire tower or are the laps the same but they move the books each time?

I’ve seen this mentioned on social media in the last couple of days, has it just come out?

Likely to watch whilst on the turbo tonight. Thanks!

I think it must have. It was the YT app on my tv that threw it up (which strangely seems more up to date than my laptop feed)

I can’t remember the format, I think you go in alternate directions but if there are two people left on the last loop, they have to go in opposite directions, or something like that.

The Warrington Way 40m ultra entries will open on 1st May.

It’s very flat and very friendly - makes up for the slight lack of scenery. Promise you’ll have fun

If he just wants to try, he could do an Ironman; or a Sprint

Streaming it now; wow, that’s some production effort! Yep, he’s deffo fully focussed on this.

Yeah, I looked on Wikipedia and it’s not clear from that page either. In any case, trying to find those books in the dark after 2 days without sleep is going to be hard.

Pretty sure they’re in the same place. Just it’s the middle of nowhere and dark half the time, so rembering what the tree looked like near that briar bush for example is as good as useless! Remember there’s no GPS at all, but i guess you could mark it on your map which would help to a point.

Watched this last night. I honestly hadn’t heard of the guy.

Tom Evans … yeah he’s quality. Highest British finisher at MdS a few years ago, and going from strength to strength. Think he won TCC a couple of years ago as well.
