The next Hardmoors in early August have decided to race, it’s got a smallish field and staggered start anyway with a few more restrictions.
Anyone been following Sabrina on the Wainwright’s? Last day and I think she’s a few hours up.
Seems to have been a few impressive records over this last week.
I hatched a plan at the weekend seeing as I had today off to do the run I had planned way back when all this kicked off.
Had a splendid day out for a double marathon, I cursed committing to that as I passed 50 but hey ho.
Really humid day with a few showers that helped on & off. Set off with 2.5l of fluid, topped up when a friend joined me for a bit with another 2l and still made another stop for a can of coke & 500ml Lucozade, that’s a lot for me and I’ve barely stopped drinking since i got back.
Fairly easy going early on, trails & hills round midway and then rolling to the finish, but i know that route like the back of my hand so no worries there.
Kind of planned a pace to complete in 10hrs initially but in latter stages was clear I wouldn’t make that.
HR had settled initially in at 125-130, touch more on inclines, mid section as it warmed drifted up 130-135 and latter stages had to keep reminding myself to push it up to 130 where possible rather than just settling for plodding home.
All that meant that 50 came & went safely under 10hrs and my mental maths decided that 10hrs10 total could maybe be on the cards… pushing after the 50mile mark upped the pace a little and brought that closer but I still ended up with half a mile to get in under 5mins which meant pretty much dismantling myself to achieve.
Looks like white horse 100 is on for September so I only have myself to blame.
great job - love the Round Coventry route
Very impressive.
Amazing!
Sabrina was on record pace until pretty much the last day when she picked up a knee injury which meant she couldn’t really go downhill properly.
John Kelly (of Barkley Marathons fame) is currently attempting the Pennine Way FKT:
yeah he said after the Spine that he was going to have a summer crack at it if i recall. How’s he getting on?
It’s a whole different level of craziness!
Up on schedule so far. He reached Hawes which is about 105 miles in less than 21 hours
So I’ve finally plotted the route of the first day of my Trial with the RAF MRT; back in August 2000. It was emotional as we were making our way up the slopes of Ben Macdui around 9 hours into a 12h day; me trying to keep up with the two ‘old sweats’ who’d obviously been told to ‘beast’ me (they were running the downhills at times) I was wearing a huge pair of Italian 4 season boots I got issued from the stores, to make things easier. They called it “The Big 7”; probably just shy of 40km with all the traversing.
Bloody hell!
I’ll do the TP100 next year I think for that WS100 qualifier, and then hopefully one of the UTWT races if things are back to normal . 50th birthday next year so may just about get away with it.
what a machine !!
Walked/jogged the Langdale Horseshoe yesterday with Mrs T which crosses/comes near to 5 of the 42 in the Bob Graham.
Were passed by a group of 3 runners who were I assume recce’ing the route or on a round as they descended Bow Fell - how they skipped down through that rock field at such a pace, I don’t know, but was a sight to behold.
I suspect that a BGR is well beyond me - anyone else thought about having a crack?
Often but not for a while, I’m not one to chance my arm so would be a big commitment in terms of travel & logistics just in training / recce runs.
Langdale horseshoe is a great race.
I know someone who did the Bob last year in about 23 hours and another lad who pulled out about halfway, I think he was injured though.
It seems to need a fair bit of commitment to recce the route, have people to help you and be good at descending.
It would be nice but I doubt I’ll ever have a go.
Chap did the BGR in 19 hours yesterday … could well have been his group. Lad i used to run with is coaching the chap that did the round. Really promising up and coming runner (the coach) called Brennan Townshend. Been beating the big names at races in the Lakes since he moved there to push his career chances. Think he won Garmin Mourne Skyline and a few others as well, so very close to GB vest status i think.
Absolutely. Also i think the unwritten rule is if you get help to run it then you pay the favour back at some point. Easier if you’re local of course!
