Good news, a place has become available in the Dragon’s Back Race 2021 and as you are top of the waiting list we have sent you an invitation to join the event.

That should get you out of bed in the morning.

Little One said, ā€˜I hope you don’t break your leg Daddy’

Just watched this, that helped.

I’ll be looking for any kind of company at the back!

Gonna make the SDW100 a pretty important prep race.

Day 1 looks like a toughie - I think that once its out of the way that it would be a great mental boost. Personally really don’t fancy Crib Goch in anything other than perfect conditions (scardy cat)

Next year it’s 6days, 383km and 17,400 mtrs of vert. I’d forgotten that bit!

a hell of a challenge

Frickin cool though

I watched a couple of films about the race last night. My thoughts are now:

Will my back handle it? (not only the course but the camping).

Will 2022 be in Sept like next year or move back to June. (Sept means getting up in the dark, first hour in dark and definitely finishing in dark)

If 2022 is back to June, I may defer, which is an option for me. (I know it will be heaps hotter).

That added 6th day could well be the tipping point. Do I want to enter and see how far I get?

Do I REALLY REALLY want to do it? I have until Friday to decide.

Some big hills in those woods! I remember doing an XC league event there above Halton camp; it was always the toughest course on the circuit.

Yeah, I think i will really need to choose my recce logistics well. I’m firing off a couple of questions to the race today and will make a decision then.

I was really excited last night but it’s dawning what a task this would be. I think I stuck my name down thinking I’d never get offered a place.

OK, had a response. No plan to shift the race back to May/June. Looking at the mandatory kit and weight limits for your main bag, I don’t even know how you’d fit it all in, plus nutrition for each day.

I suppose you’d save weight on soap, 'cos there aren’t any showers

Isn’t there a DQ rule about not trying to negotiate a shower/laundry with people outside the race organisation?

Yep and you can’t barter with shops for services. (so my plan of selling my body for a pizza has gone right out the window!)

In the cold light of day and away from the initial euphoria, I think I’m going to take the 2022 option, reasons being:

This is not ultra running, it’s mountain running and I have none of that experience.
The fitness of those not making cut off is already higher than mine.
I either glossed of over, or failed to realise the impact of the 6th added day.
It gives me more time to recce, post travel restrictions and gives me more time to build experience.
Sept will still be hard but by then I will have Wendover Woods and Arc under my belt for winter running.
Hopefully sharing a tent will be a lot safer in 2022 than it is is 2021.
It gives me a year to work out if I really want it enough.
It’s not something I can ā€˜wing’ and I’m not going there to fail.

Thoughts? (apart from being a piker  )

Sounds very reasonable thinking, easy to get carried away and jump in, needs a bit of a decent recce I’d have thought

probably the sensible option - from the film it looks like they enforce the cutoffs quite strictly so no point going into it unprepared

just looked at the length of the days/vert splits on the website - felt tired just looking at them
