Trail & Ultra Running Thread

I am in a rush today so here are some tips of top of my head

  • Winners lay down from 1st lap
  • 50 minutes is sweet spot per lap (we had quite a hard course though)
  • Eat on the go and sleep at base. I did the opposite despite this being my plan
  • I had a bit of everything I may need laid out on a plate on a table by where I sat/lay so I could take what I want. This included multiple types of liquid
  • On the first lap you will go too fast. But find somewhere halfway ish as a check point for each lap. Doesn’t need to be precise, I had just over 3k at cicra 25 minutes, if I was there by around then I knew I would be ok.
  • If you forget to start your watch, dont worry as each lap starts on the hour, so just switch to the time screen
  • A guy next to me timed out because he timed out whilst having a dump. This also needs to be planned in…

If I think of anymore over the day I will post…

Good luck, it is a head fuck. I went 18 laps, pretty (very) crap for me, but gives you a target

Thanks. This is really useful. There’s a few covid based rules I need to get my head around which might impact exactly what I can do but lie down, eat on the go and 50 minutes per lap should be the aim. Will also need to check previous results to see how quickly the field thins out and plan some toilet stops relating to this. There’s only 4 portaloos for all 141 entrants plus support crews so I don’t want to be timed out queuing for a crap.

This is interesting stuff. Some of it useful for my Endure 24, although that is a different format. We’ve hired a motor home for the event which has a shower and toilet, although our intention was not to use it.

Solo runners ( and pairs I think) get their own camping area really close to the course to cut down on wasted time.

I like the idea of a half way check per lap. My fear is that because it is continuous, it might be easy to fall into the trap of thinking ā€˜ I’ll make that up later’ .

Each lap is 7km, so it if I did 1 lap p/h, after 20 hrs I’d be at 140km with 4 hrs to cover 22km ( for 100 miles) which sounds easy on paper!

Anyway, we’ll see what damage SDW does first. Endure 24 could turn into a few laps here and there and a lot hanging out at the motor home !

Lower leg has been really sore for a few days (still managed a 10 mile run last night)

Mrs T (former staff nurse) said insect bite from our walking holiday when it first arose

Doctor consultation this evening prescribed antibiotics for cellulitis

Not ideal prep for SDW100

On the plus side, son has agreed to pacing duties for the last 45 miles

How long do you have? Hopefully the antibiotics will do their thing pretty quickly.

Starts on the 12th. Antibiotics ready to collect tomorrow morning - hoping will clear up pdq

What time you planning on starting?

Was going to aim for around 5am - how about you - fancy meeting up at the start to run together for a while - having a decent chinwag can help the miles go by?

Absolutely mate but I’m mighty slow and planning on walking every hill.

I was aiming for 5am also. Are you staying in Winch? I could pick you up if you like?

I always apply TC’s rule of ultras - if a ball would roll down it, in an ultra, walk up it :grinning:

A lift would be fantastic - will save Mrs T from having to get up at silly o’clock - we are staying at the Mercure next to the cathedral if that is ok?

I know exactly where that is, as we used to live on St Thomas St, which is the other side of the cathedral. We can go via Arlesford Rd and pick up A31 from there.

I’ve snagged a ticket on the second shuttle bus, so will be leaving my car there anyway. :+1:t2:

First 4 hours completed at Suffolk Backyard Ultra. Course is very pretty 95% trail. Exposed bits are hot, hot, hot. With current fitness I’ll be very happy if I can make it through the night. So 16-18hours hopefully.

Probably a bit fast at 42ish minutes per lap but otherwise going well

Great work @hillwall - if you can keep it conservative during the heat you should be in a great position as the afternoon cools into evening

Keep going with the updates :grinning:

Great stuff but slow down a bit!

9 hours in now. Eating much better than I normally manage in an ultra but definitely feeling the lack of training now. First big marker will be 12 hours at midnight. Hopefully the wheels stay on at least until then

Keep going buddy. :+1:

Keep it up fella. 3am will be the tough couple of hours as I’m sure you know.
Hang tough dude.

Had a poor lap last lap so need to reset my head a bit. It’s really tough not having the time to walk a significant amount.

Did a slow lap which felt a bit better but need to string a bit more together to get it back. Still, not doing bad with the amount of prep
