I’m a bad judge of age but looking at his instagram profile id say mid / late 20s maybe.
He looks the part, long flowing hair, beard etc…

Says 22 in the post above, doesn’t it?
I think Jorgan meant rhe guy in the lead. Robin
Looks like Matt is in a little train of riders coming down thta valley now. About to drop into Slovenia.
He’s just behind that Sarah Ruggins pair who took the crazy line almost northeast before dropping down through Germany.
Actually, he’ll head into Italy first … but not for long.
I presume he’ll stop before Slovenia because he’ll be committed to doing the parcours before finding any food or hotel once across the border.
( … and it’s nearly 10pm over there …)
Yeah sorry Whisk, I thought Jorgan meant the current leader!
Ah yes, I think you’re probably right
I am enjoying a pizza in a hotel. I’ll tackle the parcours tomorrow morning
I saw Sarah and said hello, she is planning to do the parcours tonight
Second climb in alps was brutal 5km @ 15%
Some riders already looking massively sleep deprived passed one guy who was riding around 12kph - he looked knackered but wants to get to CP1 tonight
My mate did that when we cycled down thru spain. He left his passport with his grandma in Borgos believing he wouldn’t need it to cross into Gibraltar
Matt is on the parcours now.
To my surprise, much of it is tarmac and on google streetview, looks spectacular.
This is near the start:
Yeah just logged in to have a look. Quote a few riders scattered on the parcours now. That must’ve been tough through the night.
They dip up and down over the 2,000m elevation mark
The guy in 2nd has only stopped for like 9 hours, crazy!
Not sure I’d like to descend a mountain pass at night, I’m crap enough at descending in the day
I think TCR needs to impose mandatory rest per day. The guys at the front are putting themselves at significant risk by taking so little rest
And others, I think there is a significant difference between running off road and cycling on public roads, in terms of the potential harm you could cause.
I guess they could mandate a window of no forward progress in everyone’s route; or have everyone stop in the same place and operate it like a ‘penalty tent’ for 8-12h i.e. time people’s arrival and departure. The later Parcours they put in always look to be more remote, and with inhernet risk if people are exhausted.
I’m taking same route in Bosnia as 21
The others seem to take the R440 that looked pretty terrible road
Since the founder of TCR died after being hit by a car this is clearly very true.
Mandatory rest would mean turning an event like this into a stage race I guess?
There must be some serious waivers/disclaimers in there. In the case of the lead riders, in the military outside of a live SHTF situation you would only see this level of deprivation in SERE training and it’s closely monitored.
Double post.
Matt has made it to CP1 in 61st, which I think is a lot higher than at any point last year (my memory is saying he was about 90th before the big mechanical??).
I reckon 40th is only a couple of hours up the road so lots of opportunity to move up the leaderboard if that’s what he wants.
Leader is already onto parcours 2, incredible.
