2022 IRONMAN 70.3 Staffordshire

Some good points in there for me to think about on Sunday - cheers :relaxed:

Nicely planned executed and written up race.

Im noticing the same steep drop 50-55–55-60.

Slightly younger than you so not as relevant … yet.

I know 6-7 who Kona qā€d at Bolton, most are this year or I’m out for differing reasons, pray it comes off after all the effort everyone’s put in.

Very nice report @TROSaracen - a great, well executed race from yourself. I’m very jealous of your run!!

Probably wise with the deferral with all the uncertainty etc

Looking at this for next year …….logistics seem like a PITA any recommendations on where to stay and how easy the before and after getting around is? I would be on my own so no spectators to worry about.

It’s a mild faff overall, but I didn’t find it too bad. Certainly much easier than the old IM UK split transition (T2 at the school in Rivington IIRC).

I stayed in Travelodge Stafford central - basic, but cheap. Very short walking distance to the T2/Registration/Expo area and a bit longer (15-20mins) to the finish area/shuttles to the start on race morning. Nicest thing with that set up is fetching your bike and T1/T2 bags after the race is very near the hotel.

You just need to drive out to the swim start/T1 on Saturday to rack bike and T1 bag (and can follow the bike route back into town if you need a recce) which is probably the biggest faff, and then make your way to the shuttles early on race day. Shuttles take about 40 mins, think I managed a sleep

I’m doing 2022 and have booked the same hotel.

Cheers Chris

Yeah the faff isn’t too bad.

Get a hotel nearest the Doxey road car park so your walk to the early shuttles on Sunday is brief.

Like TRO I slept on the way there

Here we are 2.5yrs later with 5 weeks to go.

Anyone know of any CHEAP hotels in Stafford that allow dogs?

I’m only an 80 minute drive away, but would prefer to stay over for this one, mainly ā€˜cos of the logistics of race morning.

Like you mentioned on the training thread - pricy!

I actually really struggled to find one last year and had to stay out of town in some cheap shithole near the toll road which will be of no use to you.

The logistics aren’t that bad - Into Stafford for registration and trainers dropped off at t2 - then drop your bike off at the reservoir and get a little practice swim in.

The buses pick you up from a sainsbury’s carpark that you can leave your car at all day.

Back over to t2 once it opens then back home on the M6

Pfft. A50/A500/A34 for me.
I think I’ve got some M6 toll credit left on my tag, too 🫣

Hmm…what time do the buses start leaving for the swim start?

I drove to Notts two days in a row ā€˜cos I’m not paying Ā£120 for a fricking Travelodge for eight hours :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

Bloody early mate, I can’t remember exactly but something like 4. I got the first one then just slept on the way to the reservoir. Had loads of time to spare for kicking ya tyres etc

What a weird course!

That’s not entirely accurate - pm died after 2 ish hours but I was trying to keep it around 80% - I did smash the hills though, there’s a fairly big one did I did in the big ring too

Yeah, no idea how they come up with these routes.

Have to say though, it was bloody good fun and the country side is stunning there too

Most of those roads are my prior triathlon career roads :+1:t3:
Yoxall, Kings/Abbot Bromley, Marchington etc.

It’s not really ā€œhillyā€ - just rolling.
The ā€œ6 Roads to Stubby Laneā€ segment is fun :smiling_imp:
As is the pin straight road coming down to it.
Can carry a lot of speed down there.

I’ll be alright with a 55/42 11/25, right?

Yeah fine.

I went 53/39 - 11/23

I remember one descent with a lake or river to the left, was bloody brilliant, tucked myself into a little ball and flew down it!

Just been onto BBS, reckon I could hold 82% for it pretty easily, gives me 2:35 ish

I’m pretty good at sticking to ā€œThe Numbersā€ these days:

My best 20min power from this year was set on an outdoor climb, then on an indoor climb, then on a few Zwift events, so I reckon about 300W is my actual FTP (as my FTP seems to correlate to my 20 minute ā€œeffortsā€)
So 245W certainly seems reasonable

What’s the worst that could happen, right?
