We’ve just decided on our walk for the day and we’re going to Ham Hill. Same place, or does Somerset just really like ham?

Were gonna go up Ham Hill and over to Montacute

Good MTB at Ham Hill

I almost got killed there riding up a promising trail, turns out it was a downhill red run & I didn’t realise.

That’s quite a way from home for you isn’t it GB?

10 Yr wedding anniversary weekend away. Just me and the boss. We’re staying just outside Crewkerne.

Only an hour away though.

If you’re talking Montecute near Yeovil, then probably not. High Ham and Low Ham are just the other side of the of Glastonbury/Bridgewater road but it’s all in ‘that kind of direction’ but I’ve never heard of Ham Hill but probably know it by sight.

Yeah by Yeovil. Ham Hill was a lookout and monument about a mile from the National Trust place at Montecute. Lots of nice walks and stuff.

Well that was an experience!

Firstly I’m weigh, pun intended over race weight, 12 st 2 this morning.
I entered on 5 days notice and I really really enjoyed it!

Swim
30.5 m outdoor brine pool, the chop was pretty bad for a pool as it was packed basically the whole way, 4 lengths and duck under the rope get in one side get out the other, you know the drill!
I caught 12-15 people in 500ms, and Swam 11-12 mins I’m guessing, basically chaos but very polite.

T1 I swam in shorts pulled my hr monitor up and got dressed ( including socks) probably slow.

Bike.
Bike position is much much better, was too aggressive before, only my third ride outside this year but went well considering and passed 15? People, some were on mud pluggers!
One guy came flying past me, well signed route and drivers seemed very polite.

T2
Fast for me. Old school zoot slip ons helped !
See pic.

Run
I actually enjoyed the run, it’s nice hearing
“ chest on him”
But it doesn’t make you any faster!
The extra weight really played it’s part here, I know I’m still lighter than some of you shifters, but I’m basically a midjit and all the weight goes on my top half !

Result
1:17:30.

My best target was 1:15 in this shape, I wouldn’t have been happy with over 1:20.

So bang in the middle I guess, my dad watching me was the highlight, he has a terminal illness and i was quite emotional at the end.
I’ll be back in May and I’ll be taking a few secs off that time for sure.
Met some great people had some good chats and was reminded quite painfully what a great sport this can be.

Sorry for going on… it’s only a sprint !

Great stuff @Mungo2 well done, sounds like you smashed it! It’s events like this that do indeed remind of why you love doing what you do. No pressure, just enjoy it!

Good job @Mungo2 , really enjoyed reading that. Love your old school Zoots, at first I thought you were showing us your slippers - like I’m chilling now guys, sort of thing  Then you mentioned you ran in them and I had to take a closer look!!

Must admit , that’s what I thought too . Put your feet up after a race, was just waiting for pic with the dressing gown, pipe and Bassett hound.

Great work on the race @Mungo2 :flexed_biceps::+1:

Run is on grass the whole way, those shoes have done a blistering run split.

I started talking to a guy called Barry who wasn’t young and did 1:10 ish.
He went in the swim after me, he bombed down the middle, he was fast, sub hour IM he said, he seemed like spitz in that crowd, with us it was all goals, optimum pacing, cda, results blah blah blah.

He’s doing IM Portugal next month.

Talking to four scousers in a van as I left, all on hybrids, lager was out already, eating crisps and taking the pi$$, they had no idea we’re they came and will probably no even bother finding out they couldn’t GAF about splits, times etc.

There’s room in the sport for both sorts of people and everyone else
