2023 races

I did Rhayader 30km yesterday. I was reminded why I ised it for Two Oceans training in 2015 and it’d be a good one for comrades training.

Despite being totally underwhelming in terms of fitness and speed this, I was quite chuffed to be about the same average speed as the last time I ran it (the route has changed slightly and cut off 2km). I know it was very much a training run last time and against a very strong wind but despite all that, it’s ok.

Yup that’s the one @leahnp

Cheers @Doonhamer - annoyingly the field was way stronger than last year, so I ended up placing 83rd out of 160 with a time that would have had me 52nd last year

It’s all these fit students, in my day they’d have all been in bed. Dundee certainly didn’t have a Tri Club let alone have 15 students to bus down the motorway at 7am.

Changed days!!

But yeah, happy with how things are coming along. Last year I did a good 500m of the swim as breaststroke so even putting that requirement behind me feels good.

Students don’t drink any more…

Agreed, my boy is now costing me more at Uni as he is now doing more sport, which means more membership fees and kit .

@Paul the event has been well publicised by TS, I had the option of doing the aquathlon or the Edinburgh Duathlon as a TO. One for @fatbuddha but broke my duck as a Head TO yesterday, I was glad it went smoothly and it turned out to be an opportunity to catch up with my peers who do du. Had feedback that a Marshall was actually acting as traffic control and stopping traffic to enable the riders to take a LH bend. Not great when the road is a prime route to a few golf courses

Anyone doing challenge Barcelona :joy:

This one is actually in the city by the sound of it. I actually did it before Ironman nicked it.

I’m probably bailing on the 20M trail race tomorrow. Although the roads are alright I’ve seen some photos of the area and there was quite a bit of snow overnight and it’s at a reasonable height with drifting in places. It’s going to freeze hard tonight, -6c here so it’ll be colder on the Pennines.

I don’t want the risk of running for up to 4 hours as it takes a lot out of me and it’s hard to know if there’s any potholes etc. underneath. It’s just not really worth the risk at this stage of the year.

But, if things are looking better on Sunday there’s a 10 mile flat road race that has entries on the day I might go and do as a hard session.

Sounds sensible to me. Long day out and potential for a twisted ankle in the current conditions that’d be pretty grim! Which 10 mile event is it? My Sunday 10k race has been cancelled…

It’s Thirsk 10, on the day entries cost a couple of quid more but I’m not sure how much.

I think it said cash only though if you do go.

Spent two hours this arvo looking at Dirty Reiver options…

  1. Wake up at 0230, drive, arrive at 0600, ride by 0700, home by 2100  I did that for Outlaw and Bolton.

  2. Drive up for a 6-8pm arrival on Friday. Which is a massive gamble with the M6 traffic. Also, gamble with “first come first served” camping on site.

  3. As above, but book Friday off.

  4. Sack it off (net zero cost, with petrol and camping fees, also better for the environment :person_in_lotus_position:)

I really don’t want to can it, but the 340 mile round trip for a bike ride is putting me off
I thought Kielder was closer to Darlington :weary::face_with_peeking_eye:

It’s bloody closer to Dumfries and Lockerbie :exploding_head:

Does that need making into a poll of destiny? :crystal_ball:

Bit too far for me, have fun if you head to it! I saw all the punk panthers running past the end of my road today.

I’d do option 2. Worst case is you sleep in your car if campsite is full. Chain bike to door handle it’ll probably be ok. Option 1 sounds dangerous… danger of falling asleep at wheel on return journey. Why not crash at a B&B that night?

I have driven back from IM Wales after the race twice. Four hour journey after a full IM……stop at every service station for a stretch, fresh air ….coffee……coke……anything ……… if you can avoid driving back then please do

Yeah I drove back from Bolton and Tenby last year.

Was knackered after Tenby and actually stopped for a nap near Reading at one point. Late home but less faff

Decided against it, legs were really heavy at the parkrun today and just didn’t feel good. So I’ll just go for a plod somewhere.

I’ve seen some photos of the trail race today, some bits were bad others not so but no problems about not going.

  1. Haven’t you been complaining about how much holiday your employer throws at you?

No complaints here
Got my six weeks off part planned (plus found some “extra” stuff yesterday … like train to London, Thames Path to King Alfred’s Way, loop that, then spur off to Ridgeway, train home)

Anyways … organiser said there’ll be loads of on-site camping :white_check_mark:

@GeordieM - My car is 4.7m long, so plenty of room :joy:

(Although I say all of this whilst sat here coughing my lungs up, wheezing and debating going out :face_with_peeking_eye:)
