2026 Goals

Might as well start one, albeit nearly a copy and paste from last year for me.

TLDR

Sub 5 - 70.3
Sub 90 half marathon
Sub 20 parkrun\5K
Sub 42 10K
Couple of trail races
Try and get into Tokyo 2027
Sub 10:45 at Barcelona (can’t defer this time)
Sub 60 up ADH!

Travel - Booked a trip to get a few capitals in March including Cyprus & Turkey

Work - go part-time, don’t see VS happening

Waffle :roll_eyes::joy:

A few of the sporting targets are rolling ones, wasn’t far off most and had hoped I might crack them in the last 6 weeks until I got injured. Not sure I’ll be reaching any of the running times in the first half but maybe as the year progresses.

Got the trail race in Italy and going to do a half in Cyprus all being well.

Haven’t actually entered a 70.3 yet but got a few in mind, have got ADH duathlon and long course but mostly a bit of a training week.

If\when they announce where the 70.3 WC is in 2027 I might see if there’s a chance of going, but if it’s something like £800 that’s me out, would rather do a normal 70.3 and put the extra £350 towards a holiday.

The GF is wanting to go on holiday somewhere but need to get her to commit, preference would be April\May before things get too busy and hot, that’s one worry with ADH but the altitude might make it cooler.

Barcelona is the big one, hopefully have a bit more time to train if I reduce my hours, I should have enough time now but it’s more the recovery and I’m just not very organised.

Going to be asking in early February about dropping to .6 from May and see what they say, they’ve previously indicated I can drop my hours but not sure what they’re expecting.

There’s a few DIY things but the GF generally picks what she wants and I just pay 50%

Been thinking about this quite a lot.

Always had an on-off relationship with the sport. Some years tri goals come to the fore and other years they take a back seat.

Unexpectedly, the last couple of years were quite tri-focussed as I got in with a club while working overseas, the weather was great, we had a pool, and there wasn’t much else to do.

But coming back to the UK, it’s all different. Life is quite a lot more complicated, we are pulled in more directions, and I feel like at the moment there are other fish to fry.

So maybe 2026 is going to be an off year … and that’s OK.

I still enjoy riding a bike, I still enjoy running (don’t mention swimming) and so will obviously keep doing those things. But not with any particularly big goals in mind.

I’ll try do at least one sprint tri, as this will make 35 unbroken seasons. But no destination races, long races, or anything like that.

Which leads to the first dilemma. I have some dosh sitting in a business account earmarked for a C2W scheme bike. Needs spending by April. Do I get a Speedmax, or an Aeroad? The Speedmax is obviously a weapon of choice for raceday, whereas the Aeroad a nice bike to ride just because. And if I’m only going to do one sprint tri… why not just do it on the Aeroad. So, solving this little first-world problem is goal #1.

Feel the need to have some actual athletic goals too or I’ll just sit on my backside. So here they are:

goal #2. 18mXXs parkrun

goal #3. >= 365 hours of exercise in 2026

goal #4. Find some way to get a weekly swim in again.

Have thought about some health goals too. Alcohol is a recurring theme, I drink too much (or at least, too often – 1 or 2 drinks, but almost every day). I know the science says this is bad in lots of ways. Don’t want to give it up completely. So am going with a target of <= 100 drinks in total for the whole year, kickstarted by a dry January. That’s goal #5. Probably going to have keep a logbook :man_shrugging:

Also I’m going to aim to drink a pint of water (#6) and eat at least one piece of fruit (#7) every single day. That’s easy. I like it. Just forget to do it. So the obvious solution may be to chug them with breakfast.

On the DIY front, we have decided we are going to stay put in our old house for at least another couple of years. This will require a few maintenance projects, but top of the list are the WINDOWS. There are 24 large Victorian single glazed sash windows, in various states of disrepair. I’m going to try to restore the lot of them this year. This is going to involve learning some new joinery skills to replace parts of the frames that are rotten. It’s a lot of work – about 1 window every 2 weeks on average. But needs to be done. Goal #8.

Anyway, think that’s enough to be going on with. May add a #9 and #10 later, because round number.

Anyone else? Don’t be shy now.

Unless you’re going to get into them and go for Kona or Lanza I’m not sure you could justify the sppedmax? Although your employer might think you’re worth it :joy:

Can you get clipons for the aeroroad?

365 days doesn’t sound like a lot but an hour per day is harder than it sounds with a busy schedule, unless you get any longer rides when it’s warmer!

Won’t happen next year but I’d like to get 80% age grade at the parkrun!

Not in 2026. But down the road, who knows??… you see the dilemma…

80%+ for park run sounds like a nice target. What does that translate to at M55? There’s no time like the present, I think you should go for it.

PS thankyou btw, you have helped me to see that the obvious solution may be to get an Aeroad now and a Speedmax in a couple years time. And in the distance, a lawyer’s phone rings… divorce lawyer :see_no_evil_monkey:

Haha, just make sure they’re the same colour and bury one in the garden while you use the other :joy:

Running fast is a quick route to injury at the moment and I’ve got other priorities next year that involve not being injured :joy: speed is less important.

I think 20:00 is roughly 76% so when I turn 56 I’m guessing it’ll be in the 19:30 ballpark :man_shrugging:t2:

I’ve had a couple of fallow years, in terms of all things athletic and I feel it’s time to try to aim a little higher, this year. Still quite modest when compared to some folks on here, but I think I will hopefully have enough of a balance of challenge and fun, while being realistic about what I can do. It’s the boring, process goals I need to consistently hit in order to complete the events that I’m planning on doing.

Cycling
Increase my overall volume Ride 150kms /week around 8000kms for the year.
Ride one interval session / week.
Get back under 75kgs, to be faster and more comfortable over hills. Hopefully the increased bike volume and better eating habits will help this happen.

Complete the Audax UK Super Randonneur award for riding a 200, 300, 400 and 600k Audax in the year. I’ve got events planned for all except the 400.

Enter some gravel events; probably a couple of 100k rides and use them as training rides.

Aim to win my cycling club’s Hilly 12 time trial. I won it 8 years ago and l came almost last, this year. There’s one main chap I need to beat. He was 7 minutes faster than me this year. I did bimble round, but even so, it’ll be a tall order but I’d like to at least give him a run for his money.

Run
Initially do 2 runs / week and then by March, be running 3 times per week.
Do 2 strength / stretching sessions per week 20mins / session at home.
Get to 60 ParkRuns.
Go sub 20 minutes over 5km That’s a proper stretch goal, at the moment.
Be able to walk / run a half marathon.

Triathlon.
Get to the start line of the Lakesman Tri.

Similar to @fruit_thief, my athletic goals move and sometimes these involve multi sport. Sometimes they don’t.

I’m also keen to frankly not kill myself to meet some arbitrary numbers (not judging anyone else that does).

I want to eat better and lose some weight though. Frankly, it’s too much sugar (chocolate mainly).

I also want to do a handful of races. Nothing serious, but do myself justice. That and another injury (largely) free year.

That aside, work will be very busy again. So keep going there!

Thought about this comment as it resonates, looked back on my training these last seven years against my career.

My strongest years I had significant periods out of work, and I’ve been trying to replicate or exceed that when in continuous employment (and failing) for years. Performance targets maybe should reflect that, ie some years set out to do less and achieve less.

My downfall, without setting New Year’s resolutions I usually eat a bit better after Christmas, not brilliant but the bleak period before Christmas does end up with me eating more sweets and rubbish.

2026: The Year of Decoupling

Work: The Stress-Reduction System

The goal: I’m leading three engineering teams in an environment I haven’t used before. I will not only “cope” with the stress; I will engineer it out.

Note to self: Ruthlessly kill pointless meetings and force priority clarity. If I’m carrying work in my head like a sick pet after 4pm, my system has failed. Success is a zero-carrying-cost mind, with a hard stop.

Language: The Signal-to-Noise Ratio

The goal: Swear less. I’m not becoming a fucking monk, but I’m stopping the default fatigue response.

Note to self: Swearing is a signal for genuinely shite things. Bureaucracy (unfortunately) doesn’t qualify. If I’m swearing at an IDE, I’m leaking energy that I could save for…

Fitness: The Sub-20 Problem

The goal: Go sub-20 at parkrun. No drama, no magical @joex training plans.

Note to self: Three runs a week (tempo, intervals, easy) every week. The watch doesn’t negotiate and neither do I. Inputs first, outcomes follow.

The Big Ride: Dales Divide

The goal: Finish the 400km route. Speed is irrelevant; finishing is everything.

Note to self: Prepare for the bivvy crisis. When I’m questioning every life choice at 3am in a barn on Sutton Bank, remember: the questioning is the point.

Tech: The Minimalist Experiment

The goal: Ditch the smartphone. Run an experiment with a dumb phone, iPod, and running Linux on an older 2012ish MacBook.

Note to self: This is not an identity crisis; it’s data collection. Observe what breaks when I’m no longer permanently tethered to the firehose.

Good luck untethering from that firehose.

So, sub 20 and a long bike ride :joy:

Getting rid of pointless meetings would save so much money, or make them 30 minutes max and standing up, that would get people organised!

2026 Goals

Have been thinking about this one, on and off, for a couple of days now. I may come back and alter in time; as it’s been a pretty different 2025 for various reasons.

Goal 1 - Health

See the back of this freakin’ disc issue. Definitely doing a lot better. Need to stay sensible and consistent with the rehab and hope it goes away. It has had a major effect on my mood, energy, mojo, immune system, weight, fitness and strength over the past 3 months. So I’m looking for an upward trajectory. I’m already feeling happier in myself, so I think that’s a good sign. Start going to the gym and build up sensibly from there.

May give dry Jan a go this year. I’m intrigued. I don’t drink that much, and have avoided my ‘normal’ Xmas binge night out this year. Drove to a meet up with one group of mates, only had 3 or 4 beers with another and also choosing to drive to a friend’s house on NYE. With a focus on rehab, it seems a sensible start to the year. Have Mrs GB and my birthdays to navigate, but that’s only really going to be declining an alcoholic drink with a meal - not like we’re going out out or anything.

Hoping with the top 2 that the weight will drop off, strength will return and I’ll get my energy & mojo back.

Goal 2 - Running

In direct contradiction to the above, I’ve still got my heart set on getting my Trident. It’s a mini ‘hall of fame’ for completing all 100+ milers in my mate’s race catalogue. I’ve got 2 out of 3 so far; with Devon Coast to Coast in April to go. A few months ago I was pumped for this race, as there’ll be 5/6 of my crew all racing. I’ve finished 2nd in both the other races, so was originally keen to go 3 for 3 and really train hard for once.

With the back and total absence of movement for almost 3 months, this is going to be impossible … well, competing at the front of the race will. I’ll give myself some flexibility in case the back has other ideas, but I have 109 days to get to the start line in good enough shape for a ‘complete not compete’. I need this as a goal to focus on to get better. The race is 117 miles. So a mile a day, plus a few bonus miles.

Goal 3 - Surf Lifesaving

I’ve missed the assessment sessions for board rescue and tube rescue qualifications, after doing the training sessions when my back gave up. I want to be strong enough by the spring to be able to sit the assessments. Probably means I’m going to need to swim at some point or I’ll struggle on the tube rescue. Board should be pretty straightforward, even unfit.

I’ll aim to help more formally with these quals in my daughter’s group all year. I’ve also committed to taking a more active role with the competition squad. Helping design and run the land based aspect of training for the nippers.

I’d also like to give a few Master’s races a go if the dates work out. The Devon’s will probs be my best bet as the Nationals are down in Holywell Bay this year. Great location, but due to the scheduling the Masters would be on the first weekend and the Nippers on the Thur-Sat. I’m unlikely to want to drive all the way down there 2 weeks in a row (but we’ll see). I want to be in good enough shape to genuinely compete in the land based races - if I’m anywhere near my ‘normal’ condition, then I should be in with a medal shout in the 1km at least. But I also want to put myself out of my comfort zone and give the board races a go - though I know I won’t be competitive.

Goal 4 - Work

Need to find some renewed motivation in my current role. I’ve got the 3 year itch for something more impactful; but not sure where it’s going to come from. New internal role seems unlikely, but is what I want the most - but I’d need to create something brand new. But I’ll work on it. Don’t really want to leave the company yet, so I’ll see what the next 12 months look like. If I think I’m at a glass ceiling for what I want to do, then I’ll start exploring. By that point I’d have had 12 months experience on the CV of my board role, which I hope will a) prepare me for my next role; b) help the old CV out and c) may even facilitate some new contacts that I can lever.

Continuing from the above, I want to make the most of the opportunity of my board position. Learn from the other Directors. Absorb as much information and experience as I can. Be extra inquisitive. Make sure I bring the learning into my role.

Overall, make sure I’m enjoying myself. Also, I want to support Mrs GB in whatever way I can to navigate career crossroads that she’s at.

Goal 5 - Kids

Be the best Dad I can be. Try to be a little less grumpy. Don’t automatically say ‘no’ until i’ve properly thought about what they’re asking. Prepare big mini GB as best we can for secondary school. Prepare ourselves for her going to secondary! Just give them as good a childhood as we can! Spend more time on the beach in the summer on the water. Find that extra bit of energy and motivation to grab a board or kayak and pop down for an evening paddle.

Goal 6 - House

Complete renovation of the lounge in H1. Work hard on it. Push to completion, and try not to do what we always do which is drastically slow down once we hit about 75% completion. Complete the scabby downstairs toilet. Once plumber and plasterer have done their bit, we can decorate and finish pretty easily ourselves.

Maybe start on the dining room and office if we have any funds left!

Get the garage fixed before it becomes a bigger problem. Continue to chip away at the garden; but not to get down about how big a project it is. Keep making small improvements every year, and when the funds are replenished then we can dive into bigger, more dramatic changes.

Goal 7 - Stay curious

Keep reading books. Listen to people - like really listen. Constantly strive to be a better person. Be curious about the world. Try to make a difference, no matter how small.

I think that’s about it for my year. Sorry for the long read; but I’ve been very reflective this past week.

Deep breath
Goal 1 - Run faster - sub 16:30 5km and 35:30 10km
Goal 2 - Podium at the British Duathlon Champs (Sprint & Standard)
Goal 3 - Top 3 in GB AG results for Euro and Worlds (standard and MD)
Goal 4 - Drop a couple of KGs work/stress/booze has meant the weight didn’t drop this year.
Goal 5 - Decouple my life/identity from work, it shouldn’t define me but I am neck deep in it for too long and I am feeling the effects now.
There said it might not be achieved but can at least try.

Curious as to your two running targets.

I’d equate a sub 16.30 5km to be well under 35 mins for 10k - more like 34.30

Does your speed not translate as well into the longer distances?
