Paging @Jorgan bike course is 3k bloody short now! That would have been worth at least 15 minutes ![]()
No idea - maybe changing tyres ![]()
Watching the IM “post race report” highlights on YouTube and they even said “…heading onto the 177k bike course”
As for the elapsed time above that has to be tire changes. If they changed two in that time then great work.
Not sure if serious? He did say he had to change tubes
10 minutes is reasonable for a tube change or two. Sounds like more are commenting about it now.
~5 minutes per change tube change?
Means not stopping at aid stations though *unless the changes were v. quick
I’m just holding up TriTalk tradition by focussing on the irrelevant details of uploaded pics. I feel that as a community we have started to let things slide, and this is the apocryphal thin end of the wedge.
We’ll be selling triathlonbox in no time at all if things continue as they are.
Why didn’t you pick up that they did it on a wattbike?

I’ve entered a 160K audax that circles York in early July, it’s the week before the 70.3 in France and the plan is to continue travelling afterwards and might do a triathlon in Befordshire the day after, just the standard as a bit of a tester.
Need to get some longer rides in, but if necessary I can wimp it as there’s also a 100k & 50k the same day.
Got a double header tomorrow, sort of!
First up is a 50M TT near Keswick, it’s not a bad course as it is on the A66 so the surface should be good, got a bit of climbing but nothing too bad. Not going to push too hard and think I’ll be lucky if I get under 2:20 TBH, but the wind is supposed to be very calm which should be good.
Then I’m heading back to do a leg in the Cleveland Way relays for the running club, but not until about 3:30 so no rushing. It’s an unofficial run from Filey to Helmsely on the CW, mostly fun but there’s a bit of kudos about your team doing well. It’s only about the second time I’ve managed to do a leg as it often clashes with other races. My leg is only ~10k and fairly flat, but I’ve got about 5K to walk\jog from where I’ll be parking.
Been feeling meh all week but improving and had a fairly easy day today and will be going to bed early.
Good luck to Chris & Robin at the slateman, and anyone else!
I’ll beheading home from Keswick in an hour or so going A66. What time you off & Where’s the start?
Just finished, started at 7:20, tough breeze but survived.

When autocorrect goes all medieval
Well done @Chriswim with his 3rd place finish at Slateman Legend! He must have flown round the course. And I’m sure he will mind me saying I’m pretty sure he put his wetsuit on backwards, then had to quickly take it off and put it back on with 7mins till the start!
Not my finest moment ![]()
Congrats to you too, tough course but beautiful event!! Really not spoken enough about. I’ll definitely be checking out Snowman and Sandman as well for future years, all look phenomenal.
Race report for Slateman Legend, for a middle of pack finish, for anyone that’s interested. Sorry it’s a bit long.
Didn’t have the best nights sleep leading up to it, toddler waking in the night for a couple of nights, I thought I’d get a good night last night, as I was at the hotel by myself, until I woke at 2.45am and couldn’t get back to sleep again.
I’m using Slateman Legend as a practice race for IM Wales in a few months, so breakfast, fuelling etc would be similar.
I met ChrisSwim just before the start. That would be the last I would see of him until the finish, as he came in 3rd overall.
Weather was cloudy 9C initially, wind 8-10mph, warming to 16C or so mid afternoon. Water temp was about 14C.
Swim went ok, I’ve not swam at all until the last month, a few sessions 12m ago, then 10yrs before that, so was a little apprehensive about stringing 1900m together without overdoing it. Got round in 38:56, which was about what I’d expected. Chip time was 40:28 due to a decent length run to T1 timing mat. 51st overall.
T1 I took steady, went with socks, arm warmers, Gabba ros jacket and fingerless gloves, as it was a bit chilly. Had a sip of a drink too. A leisurely 5min14. Was next to a chap who was riding in a banana costume, can’t think that would help his bike time. 76th overall.
Bike I went with my Trek Speed Concept 7.5, which I’ve had since the end of 2010 and haven’t really used, as I stopped doing any tris for years. I’ve managed to get some good old Zipp wheels on eBay last year, so went with an 808 front and disc, with aero helmet - I need all the help I can get. Also I put a hanger extender on, with a 105GS dérailleur, so I can just about get 34-11 cassette working ok.
My aim was normalised 225w (my FTP is 300w at 85kg, so I’m not fast) and approx 3h30 overall, according to best bike split. Didn’t feel brilliant to start off with, was breathing very heavily. Gradually settled in.
The course was rolling, a few decent climbs, but nothing ridiculous, the down hills were very fast and flowing, didn’t need to be on the brakes much. I should add, it’s not the normal course, due to roadworks, it was 95k contingency course, with a 3k neutralised section at the start, as we had to go on a bike track to avoid more roadworks. Passed 1hr at 32.5kph and about 235w normalised. Half way took my arm warmers off, then hit a wasp with my helmet, land on my arm and sting me 1min after the warmers came off.
Got round in 3h24.39s on my Garmin, (3h18.32 chip time after neutralised section removed). 27.9kph, normalised 227w, average 202w, TSS 192, av HR 137, max 162bpm. Drank 2 litres of carb/electrolyte mix, with a bit of malt loaf and 2x PF&H 60g chews → 100g/hr. 25th overall.
T2 went smoothly, apart from forgetting to take off my calf sleeves and my cycling jacket, duh. 1min48. 10th overall.
Run: I’d seen about the big climb, and thought it might add about 20mins onto what I’d expect to do, so 2h-2.10, until I looked at the last few years of results, which seemed to have most people around 20th place (where I thought I would come) taking 2h30. So I revised my expectation to 2h30.
Started off ok, dropped my cycling jacket at the water station near the finish, to pick up later. I went with road shoes, I’d asked the transition marshall’s what they recommended, they said trail as some of the descents are technical, but I’m a fair bit slower in my trail shoes, so took the risk.
Got stitch after about 5mins, as I’d had a drink in T2 and it was slightly downhill along a road, I knew it would go when we started pointing uphill. I thought the hill would be mainly a walk. What I hadn’t considered was most of the down was a bit tricky too, so that wasn’t much faster than a walk either. There were also quite a few steep uphill sections in the 2nd half of the lap, that I walked. 1st lap was busy with Legend, Standard and Sprint runners. 2nd lap I only saw a handful of people.
22.4km, +711m elevation, HR average 134, max 156. Lap 1: 1h12.28, Lap 2: 1h13.08. 2hr25.36 overall, so really happy with pacing. And I didn’t get lapped by ChrisSwim, but only just. I did get lapped by the leader in the last 400m though, which was disappointing. I took a 800ml bottle with 80g carbs with me, plus 2x 60g carb chews. Drank water at aid stations, which meant I had 2 litres in total on the run, so 4.5 litres overall. I should have drunk more I think, as I’m a heavy sweater.
Finished 22nd out of 114 finishers, 6h31.37 chip time with neutralised section deducted (6h38.35 on my Garmin) which I’m pretty pleased with. Could have had a top 20 if I’d been 1min quicker.
Overall a great, well organised event. Really good course. I could imagine it would be a little different if it was raining and windy. I couldn’t imagine doing the Ultra course, they were off at 5.15am, 1h45 before us, and the lead bikes only came back to T2 about 20-30mins after I’d finished.
well done Jeff ![]()
Errr
Might need a maths recheck there Robin! Far from mid pack!
Sounds like you raced it really well.
Got to have some confidence heading into the summer training block now!
Well done, and great report. ![]()
