All things Turbo

Given Zwift’s dominance of the market, I can’t see it being long before the other apps become compatible with the cog and virtual shifting.

TrainerRoad in erg mode will work without shifting.

Bike-wise, I’d suggest something cheap and nasty to have fixed to the turbo. Whatever goes on there gets destroyed by sweat in my experience.

My turbo set up brought out of retirement a bottom of the range Halfords roadie from 2007 (It weighs a ton, the extra weight of course is why I couldn’t stay with Jeff up Bologna )

Well tonight’s session lasted 25 mins before everything went slack. Busted belt, first time in 7 years!
1st generation Direto , any good links for spares?

Contact Elite. They sent me a free one, and that was during covid when everything turbo was in short supply. They also send a replacement red wheel as well from memory.

Mine was never the same after replacing the belt though. It had a pulsing type sensation to the resistance. They eventually accepted there was a circuit board issue too. So maybe just bad luck.

Cheers mate, looks like that’s what most people do. My unit is very old, so well well out of warranty.

Amazon have them with the black pulley tensioner for £32. Looking on some forums though, a few people say their units were never the same. Given how little I ride these days, worth a shot.

Replaced the belt on the Direto. Just could not get the screws out to replace the pulley and pillar but I did loosen it enough to get the belt on.

Did the top pulley bolt up to the recommended 12 turns but it was slipping a fair bit on testing. Did the bolt another turn and a quarter and seems better.

I’ll give it a proper test tomorrow. Been a long day work wise :man_facepalming:t2:

Anyone got a zwift referral code? Going to finally give it a go and see how I get on with it so if I can get anyone a little bonus in the process happy to do so.

I’ll oblige

I can also be available for zwift support, tips n tricks to repay the favour :grimacing:

Careful @Paul , it’s a slippery slope, before you know it @mw22 will have decked out your entire pain cave and wardrobe and your wallet will be several K lighter :grinning:

Thanks mate. Will get myself sorted later on. Appreciate the offer!

Does anyone have recommendations for reasonable priced shoes for indoor cycling? When using the wattbike and doing spin etc… I’m still using trainers like a chump but hoping to do some longer stuff over winter and would be good to get some lighter SPD one.

@fruit_thief just so you know you’ll need to get a new turbo soon. As I have put an order in for his n hers.

Taken a punt on the Jet-black victory. Early DC rainmaker review looked promotion, GP Lama put a video review up yesterday and highly praised it.

Wife still on my flux from 2017. No idea how that’s still going, tho did have some internals replaced 2 years back. Occasionally it won’t connect at all.

My Saris was from 2019 so owes me nothing. Drop outs are rare but highly frustrating

New ones £400 each.
WiFi or direct connection to PC
Virtual shifting (game changer for wife who shifts under full load all the time. Also hearing it’s good for racing).
Zwift cog included so should be nice chain line and quiet.
No less accurate than that we have now.
Race mode… Bit of a gimmick, but can’t hurt having a faster response.

Hopefully pre orders come later this month

How did you get on @Adam at reducing the vibrations?

I finally took the bike out the box, and am starting to set up an indoor area. Cleva vacmaster fan on order after stenards recommendation, the non-cycling one given it seems 99% the same, just without a remote, for half the price.

Will need a lot of floor dampening to reduce the vibrations to downstairs. Thinking of going for a multi-layer set up discussed elsewhere, of mat-vibration pods-mat-trainer, to get the trainer off the floor.
Example:

Question: Presumably these softer jigsaw mats will be better than buying the harder rubber gym flooring?

I’ve been using a yoga mat with a piece of off cut carpet. It’s totally fine tbh. My turbo room is directly under my youngest’s bedroom and I’ve not yet woken her up.

I think I just needed to get used to a slightly different sound. That and adding a few extra pieces of furniture to the room so it’s not quite as empty and ‘boomy’.

I just use the halfords cheap matting that connects together like a jigsaw.

On the cleva fan, just get an amazon ir plug switch. Plug that into the plug, the fan plug into the switch, and you have a 1 speed remote controlled fan.

Might try with just one jigsaw mat first and see how it is. Will be better once we buy a house, but currently I’m in a listed building apartment with someone who also does shift work underneath us so want to reduce the vibrations down to them.

Yeah saw that above about the fan, might be handy to not have it on for warm up if it’s as powerful as you say :+1:

Pair of Jet-black victorys arriving tomorrow… Lots of positives and new tech.

Thought I’d grab a dual record just to compare with my current Saris. It doesn’t read well :see_no_evil:
@Jorgan might explain my victories :flushed:

I use Assioma Duos.

Suggests my turbo is over reading a bit more than it should :flushed:

Exactly, all you fakers with your £1k smart trainers. I bet Mulrine is on that sauce too. Although I can avoid him now due to ZRS
