Best/Worst Roll of Honour

@JeffB - I didn’t realise that about YorkshireMan. CBA with that, unless the race is super local or a WTC event.

I’d discounted GrafMan, as it looked a bit dull :see_no_evil:

I don’t mind a cold swim.

@Adam - I think the utterly nuts bike course more than makes up for it!!!

Bala used to be 2/78(?)/20, but was bloody brilliant.

Cotswold 113 is great and pretty much bang on 1.9/90/21.1 (Run is about 400-600m short)

That’s the only “proper” middle distance I’ve done.

I’m not so fussed about the distances being bang on for middle, so long as they let you know it’s something like 2/85/18.

@ChrisSwim - didn’t realise that about EpicMan, or that Lakesman had sold out :scream:

Outlaw half is mid May and will likely be coldAF.

Plus, I know @Jorgan isn’t a fan of the lake.

And I don’t want to see it again until registration day for Outlaw full

I think with Outlaw Half you could preregistration and bag a slot, but they all sold in minutes. So only left packages. But I could be wrong?

The swim at Deva puts me off. The river is crap.

I’ve swam in it back in 2009 after a deluge the day before and didn’t go anywhere for about 15 minutes, due to the current.

Also loads of people got ill.

Castle events can do one.

Cholmondley is proper close to me, but the cost is ridiculous.

Anyways, I can only do one event per year that requires all weekend of faffing around.

Chester means I’ll be home by midday on Sunday.

Doing Staffs means I can’t do Outlaw.

IM70.3 Dun Laoghaire (Dublin) looks like a nice scenic course (obvs hilly). Date and travel not so appealing.

Maybe Tenby needs a Half…

IM70.3 Tenby! (early July)

Vote for Pedro!

But they do LCW in Tenby as their mid-season money-spinner.

Yeah my only reason for considering is because I might be in Australia or NZ at the time anyway. Would likely need luck and rolldowns though if only one slot, and need to decide if worth risk of disappointment if do Stafford and dont qualify.

Yes that rings a bell. This year was new but yes think had to enter multiple events to get access to Outlaw half

I entered Outlaw half @ Nottingham only. The first x no. of places are reserved for peeps who book 2 events, couple of months later the remaining places are sold.

As Jorgan says, I think you’d likely get it if you wanted to go. I would have thought 40 slots would end up meaning your AG has more than just the 1?

The year it was in South Africa, male roll downs at Mallorca 70.3 were a case of Paul Kaye reading 15 names, then getting bored, and simply asking if there was anyone in the room who wanted to go, and if so for them all to come up to the front and they’d work out who was highest.

Nice this year has obviously been a completely different story.

EDIT - see here re Mallorca 70.3 2018.
M45-50 “rolled” to 163rd in AG!

@Poet it will be interesting to see if they change the checkin for the Yorkshireman next year, I think the main reason was because of the full distance race starting at 6am, there was barely 90 entries for it although it was announced reasonably late so it will be interesting to see if the full runs.

Ironman have also just announced a new 70.3 next to Amsterdam in June, Westfriesland. I think there was a bit of a cockup last week when it was announced on the 70.3 WC Facebook feed and I think got deleted reasonably soon after :joy:

40 slots for Taupo, I actually reckon a lot of European races won’t use all the slots and anyone that stays behind will have an excellent chance.

There are some epic rolldowns in the bigger AGs there! However look at the two oldest men’s AGs, both first places took their slots…the joys of being an affluent pensioner.

At Edinburgh last year for SA roll down they actually asked if there were 40 people in the room interested, 13 female and 37 male, about 46 people said yes, so they just said come up and give us your money.

That new 70.3 in Westfriesland - I was tempted to post on the FB page asking if they were trying to create an even flatter more soulless bike than IM Hamburg

New thread to discuss roll downs.

At least Taupo sounds like it would be worth going to regardless of the prestige of event. Seems well reviewed on worldwide roll of honours.

As for Yorkshireman I have hopes it does well, but may just become a 1/2 if not feasible to have another LD race with Bolton and Lakes man. They did announce it very late this year though so not surprising low uptake.

So…

…what half are we all doing next year?

Midlands meet-up at Staffs?

Best medal: Kent Road Runner (mahoosive) and LCW
Best goodie bag: Outlaw rucksack is superb
Worst bike: South Coast triathlon - 12 laps up and down the seafront with turn points each end made it very busy and a little dangerous. And last 2-3 miles of Outlaw, but to be fair they do warn you about that in the briefing.

I’ve enjoyed the majority of my races, despite near hypothermia at times.

Assuming we are sticking to 140.3
Best swim - Swissman, off a ferry next to a little island, swim to shore in an Italian lake surrounded by mountains. What’s not perfect? Mallorca - nice underwater scenery to look at
Best bike - Swissman, big mountains, views and perfect roads. Mallorca for good scenery, interesting course and fast roads. Wales for the support
Best run - Hamburg. More of a walk in my case, and ruined by the heat, but best support along the course by a country mile.

Other mentions.
Logistics - Mallorca, by miles the best, everything in one place by the beach, loads of accommodation within short walking distance
Do it again - all of them but one
Never again - Hamburg, the bike was like triathlon purgatory
Underrated - Vichy, I thought this was a great event, and for a large town had a cracking atmosphere

Am surprised they cancelled Mallorca as it seemed to have the ingredients for a great event.

So, those who’ve done Tenby & Hamburg, how do the runs compare for support. Similar?
