£180 for the full, £90 for the half…or maybe a £100. i know he makes very little if anything on the race. It’s a labour of love really. It’s a great little race though and the half is the “London Champs” now so a few good athletes show up. The half is actually a good competitive race, the full is a bunch of enduroman types having fun.
Does MnM get many people travel from afar?
In 2013 there was a septic. He had a discovery channel yellow jersey on. Legend but no you aint getting many
Thought I might do Immortal Wimbleball next year, but it’s on my Daughter’s Birthday. Stourhead race is my Son’s Birthday weekend . Hence I always usually end-up doing the Cotswold 113, but I’m getting bored of that now, as good an event as it is. I fact my Birthday is the only one not during the Season
Sorry, I meant more than a couple hours from Dartford!
yes there has been a few over the years. I know most of the enduro nutters frequented it and DecaDave has raced there. I think there is usually only about 50 or 60 do the full, 150ish for the half IIRC and they run a quarter that is popular. The first couple of hours therefore are busy and as the night goes on it becomes lonelier
Okay…so here’s some events to whet the appetite (toss-off between Deva and Staffs for me…though cost will probably win it!)
North West
Chester Deva ~2 June (looks quite good and was the British Champs this year, Chester is also ace for families - the zoo in fantastic and it’s a zippy ride back down the M5 to pirate country)
North Wales
Snowdon Slateman Legend ~20 May (or make a weekend of it and do the sprint on Sat and the Oly+ on Sunday. Hilly. Looks ace)
Lake District
ADITL ~1 June (TT1.0 old favourite, looks incredible and hilly. Very hilly.)
EpicMan Windermere ~1 June (undulating bike, flat run)
Lakesman Half ~16 June (flat, ride out to the coast and back, flat run, possibly short)
Helvellyn ~1 Sep (The clue is in the title, looks like Hell, in a good way)
Midlands
70.3 Staffs ~9 June (Split transition, doesn’t look like a great bike course)
Yorkshire
YorkshireMan Half ~23 June (Looks mint, as it’s in Yorkshire, so must be good. Flat and fast)
South
Swanage Tri Festival ~30 June (Steady climbs, mad descents and a hilly trail run - sounds really good)
Weymouth Middle ~7 July (non-WTC version)
Ah right, I did have a quick look at the Staffs website and it said date TBD.
Yep, still tbd. The 9th June date Poet put up was this years race date
Best Swim: IM Barcelona. I forgot my wetsuit but the water was about bath temperature. Didn’t unduly affect my swim time (I’m always slow)
Best Bike: Lanzarote. 5 time finisher. Quite a few training camps on the island done. The view as you are heading up to Rio never gets old.
Best Run: not sure about this one. Monaco 70.3 was quite good (and I’m certainly not an F1 fan)
Hence the tilde (approximate)
Previous dates:
June 9th 2019 (Cannock/Staffs)
June 11th 2018 (Cannock/Staffs)
June 18th 2017 (Shugborough)
June 12th 2016 (Shugborough)
June 14th 2015 (inaugural event)
Likelihood is that it’ll be the second Sunday in June.
Also, bike course is slow. The A515 surface (Yoxall to Marchington) is abysmal.
The surface around Blithfield is okay, but massive chips (like New Zealand)
That’s from riding round there prior to 2014.
Will Clarke rode a 2:14 in 2019.
Lucy Charles-Barclay rode a 2:30 same year.
You have to rack and register on Saturday.
Racking is a 30-45 minute drive from Stafford.
Buses on Sunday start at 0415
There’s not much to do around there, apart from sail or awesome MTB trails, on the Saturday.
When WTC list the top two attractions as Alton Towers and Drayton Manor Park, kind of says it all!
Lichfield is okay for a quick mooch around.
Bridgwater Cycles is amazing, but a bit far away.
Despite being blind as a bat I didn’t actually find sighting too bad Sunday and I normally struggle, at least the buoys they had were a decent size and I did have a new pair of goggles on so they didn’t fog up.
More buoys would have been useful but I was partly using the bridges to aim for as well.
My swimming isn’t going great atm but it did seem slow though for some reason based on general times. Eg, I think I was in my usual percentage for our category despite being about 5 minutes slower than previous
Jeff
Worst transition: Leeds ITU AG race T2 2016. Godforsaken rubblestrewn abandoned car park half a mile from anything. Bloody painful to run across with your bike. Some competitors reported seeing discarded syringes lying about.
Best transition: Swashbuckler.
To follow on to Poet’s post,
Slateman was excellent but prepare for a cold swim and you really need the weather to be good. I’d also chuck the Sandman in as well, roads were generally excellent and quiet for the UK.
DITL, the bike has changed and is a bit flatter I think, run still has a nice fell section.
Helvellyn, yes but be prepared for the cold swim and Rob’s Magic thermometer that I’m sure he dips in the kettle before putting it in the lake
Yorkshireman 70.3 was actually very good, not sure I’d fancy the full though, swim was straight and no problems, bike was better than I expected with only a few digs and quite a lot of places to get aero. Run was ok with a short bit on grass or track. And as Poet says it’s in North Yorkshire so what else could you want . Main issue for me was that because there was a full you had to check your bike in the day before which was a bit of a faff when you live an hour away and not much point staying there.
I also enjoyed the Weymouth Bustinskin 70.3. Grafman as well.
Jeff
Ooh, I had forgotten about that one.
Also gets the medal for worst split-transition organisation ever. I was lucky enough “only” having to wait for 3 hours in the rain and cold to get my swim kit bag, but almost anyone after me had to go back to the swim venue to pick theirs up. They simply just stopped the trucks driving forth and back. Loved the one who had tickets for grandstand in their kit bags and thus couldn’t even go see the pros.
Was also considering half options for next year. But fairly certain Cotswold 113 will be the choice.
@Leigh195 did the half at Swanage this year. Had good things to say about it. Think the distances are a bit weird though
My list for next year is also pretty similar to #67 from Poet, especially given also NW based.
Deva and Yorkshire man probably high on the list.
I maybe have half an eye in back of mind at attempting to qualify for Taupo 70.3 which would be only reason to go for IM branded on maybe a long shot.
Lakesman has sold out. 100% sounds worth it for future.
Epicman was flat run but all trail or grass with muddy sections, zero chance of wearing road shoes this year despite dry on day. Good event for the price though, smooth and well organised etc but tough slow run.
Considering Outlaw Half.
Castle Howard doesn’t sound like it justifies more than double the price of the local events I do like.
Have family in Essex that tend to visit every August would be reason for giving MM a go.
Cotswold 113 sounds good but a long way to travel for me.
Given it’s Taupo you’d probably stand a good chance; how many people want to or can afford to travel to NZ for a Triathlon. Especially if it’s in Term time.
Not sure if you can enter Outlaw half as a stand alone OSB event. This year you had to sign up for one of their other events at the same time. No idea if this is the norm with them though
Had also thought this.
If you’ve got the cash it’s probably going to be an easier year to qualify
