Bike Cleaning

Its now or never. Got a commuter hung up for 9 months that had a clean but still looks awful. So can practice on that whilst its not gonna be used for ages.
If that goes ok, might dabble with the TT.

My canyon from last year is still too new for me to dare touch tho .

@Poet what size is the Lidl cleaner - 600ml?

No idea!!!
500ml
Probably

@mw22 - Do you mean the W5 degreaser or the ultrasonic cleaner?

I can go measure them now

The actual ultrasonic cleaner… Was looking at a 600ml one online. Looked shaped enough to take a casette

The Lidl one is wide enough for a DVD and fit in my 28T rear 3 block. Along with the other 8 sprockets spread out.

Probably wouldn’t fit a 30/32T rear.

Can someone link what wax is needed please

I used normal paraffin wax off ebay none of this fancy stuff. You could mix in some ptfe powder if you wanted to.

I’d consider buying some Molten speedwax as it’s £21 a bag but the Silca stuff at £45 is mega pricey for the benefits.

I couldn’t find any in stock (paraffin) when I was buying.
I figured I’d saved so much on the US cleaner and slow cooker, that an extra tenner on the wax was neither here nor there.
But yes, I’ll be looking for standard paraffin candle wax pellets in future…or melting down 100 IKEA tea light :see_no_evil:

I’ve caved and ordered 2kg of that P9056 wax, cheers. This conference call I’m on must be dull…

Where did you order from @GeordieM ??

This place: https://waxmeltshop.co.uk/paraffin-container-wax-1kg/

Hopefully it’s the right stuff and arrives promptly…

So…my cassette and chain were super clean and I probably overdid it with the wax.
I went out on it and it was dreamy.
Gave it a quick clean afterwards.

All good.

Chain, cassette and chain set now have some mild rust/oxidisation on them.

Any ideas on how to stop this occurring?

Obviously, when using oil/lube it forms a barrier which doesn’t oxidise.

But with waxing, everything is dry and naked.

Do I just need to thoroughly dry everything?

Yes.

I’ve found this with my winter bike. Which is obviously getting all of the elements and shit off of the road

I spend a few minutes wiping the chain with wet wipes then drying with a cloth.

Mine got battered last week and has a few small spots of rust showing - it’ll be going back in the pot tomorrow evening.

Depending on what wax you use it just doesn’t give that level of protection against rain etc I’ve found. Still I’d much rather this then having to deal with chain lube and a shitty drive chain

Yeah, I thought it was just my preparation, but I’m having to cook mine every 100 miles in this winter weather. It’s not a big hardship, but something that we don’t hear about.

Roll on summer.

Yes. I could have helped myself and given it a wipe after Thursday. I’ve only just got round to taking it off now. So a further 15 or so hours just sat with that crap on it.

Properly popping and crackling in the cooker now though!

I’m also putting mine in a sieve & pouring a kettle of boiling water over it prior to the cook.

GT85 anybody
