What do you guys do with the quicklink?
Do you put it in the wax too or leave it out and rely on the the two ends of the main chain having enough of a coating on them?
I’ve been putting it in the wax up until now but it’s a pain to get out (I’ve resorted to a magnet on a stick) but find I have to scratch the wax off the inside of the plates or it won’t go though far enough to click into place.
I wax mine with the chain. And yeah normally have to scratch a bit of wax off to refit it
I’ve got a little deep fat frying basket that makes life slightly easier removing them though
That’s a good shout, my ultrasonic cleaner has a little tray for the same purpose, hadn’t thought of similar for the slow cooker.
I have a bit of a coat hanger that I put the chain on for waxing and put the quick link on that. Let’s me stir it all around while it’s in the wax and hang it up when I take it out.
I link my chain together and split it again to put it on the bike.
Like @pacha, mine’s all on a bit of wire so you can give it a bit of a swizzle.
That is a much better solution!
Back in after less than 300km of winter riding.
It was black with grime after yesterday.
Think it’s from the rim brake pads.
Bike sounded like a bag of spanners for the last 40km.
Not impressed so far
What’s the best cassette degreaser spray for everyday maintenance? I’ve pretty much run out, so will need something new for the spring when I start riding outside again. I’m also almost out of muc off dry lube spray.
May as well put in a bulk order for bits and bobs. Obvs there’s muc off. Any other decent brands? I had a halfords one (as part of a cleaning pack I bought with some old vouchers) but it was pretty crap. Used half a tin each time to get it to finally shift the grime.
Any of the eco brands any good, as I’d like to do my bit.
And no. I’m not playing with wax!
Ta
That’s the insight I’m looking for.
Two hours later and I’ve cleaned my bike, two sets of wheels, a cassette and waxed the chain
Old method:
4 minute jet wash
Replace chain and cassette each year (£45?)
Is that with a home pressure washer? Full blast, or do you lower the psi?
Not sure of it’s true or not, but I heard somewhere that pressure washers can kill the lube in various parts of the bike. May be a myth.
How many miles out of your chain and cassette?
Car jet wash. £1 for two mins.
I’ve always done it.
Headset and bb need replacing every two years with jet washing. So that’s £60?
Chain and cassette from summer bike go onto winter bike and the summer bike gets new stuff.
TT bike is 10sp so has its own ecosystem.
Erm, got my summer bike in February 2019 and it donated the chain and cassette to the Ribble last year.
I do less than 10km per year across three bikes all in.
I just like the summer bike to be crispAF and totally sound free.
Probably change them after 5km???
I also went through the whole rigmarole yesterday.
Bloody rained on this mornings ride and now need to do it all over again. Bike is impressively caked in shit
So what are we thinking about waxing in the British winter???
It’s a pain in the arse
I sadly quite enjoy it though
Not cleaning twice in one weekend though!
Having read all this I think I’ll limit waxing to my best road bike and TT bike which both hibernate the winter and enjoy only dry weather!!!
Are you some sort of contortionist who can do it yourself, or do you have assistance?
I’m still using old skool oil on my commuter & only getting out once a week on my winter bike which is waxed. Like @Adam I don’t really mind the waxing process & if I’m only doing it once a week it’s not a big problem. I’ve got a bike which sits on my turbo & that doesn’t need to be waxed anywhere near as often so that bodes well for a lower maintenance summer.
Return from ride routine.
