Dog seems to eat into your time. Have you considered a cat?

Said nobody ever!
I like walking the dog.

Anyway, back to cleaning…just back from walking the dog and now breaking the wax off the chain.

Found out I can make cool shapes with it!

I started waxing (chain) after following this thread, last two rides have been wet and haven’t had to re wax yet, the key for me is washing off bike and chain straight away and then making sure it’s dried well. The good thing is that when drying chain there’s no greasy/oily mess on the rag, or me!

Don’t know if it’s any good, but “it is recommended for cyclists who take a minimalist approach to drivetrain maintenance”

Running tubeless tyres on my gravel bike, (first time in my life I have ran tubeless) and every time I get a little hole the sealant seems to spray out like a fountain, this isn’t normal is it??? I’m thinking the OKO Magic milk I got from Planet X is a load of shite and I need to replace the sealant with something better?

Yes, it’s normal.
And it stinks like fish and gets all over your clothing.

@Matthew_Spooner , can I just re-check sequencing. If I’m taking a traditional chain, and now have the ultrasonic cleaner and wax+slow cooker, what’s the order?

Degrease outside of the ultrasonic cleaner? Then into the ultrasonic cleaner with just water? Or also some product? Do you then use an alcohol based solution that will evaporate to leave it perfectly clean before waxing? How long in the slow cooker?

Probably should have asked all this in the week so I could be fully prepared! 🤦

Here you are @Cobbie

Hmmm - after the rusty nightmare of this winter’s very wet riding I am almost tempted.

Luckily everything has now dried out so there’s no need

(I have downloaded the guide though, thanks  )

With a new chain or an oily chain

Leave chain overnight in degreaser, then wash off the clean with white spirit

Put chain in Ultra sonic cleaner with water and washing up liquid, run 3 6min cycles the rinse and run 1 cycle with water

I dont leave chain to dry, just pop into hot wax, leave 15 mins or more, the come back and stir Chain around, carry on stiring chain periodical until no more bubbles.

After first time I dont bother cleaning chain, just pop into wax. You dont tend to get bubbles.

@stenard - Check out the guide from @Doonhamer above, it’s great.

After my ultrasonic water cycle, I do a cycle with methylated spirits, then dry the chain (you can manually dry it, leave it on a radiator, or whack it in the oven for a bit)
Once dry, stick it in the slow cooker.

Also, it stinks. So make sure the area is well ventilated.

Finally, I’m impressed you’ve time to do this after just moving house :scream:

Thanks

Just to be clear, is this a cycle in in the ultrasonic, or just in a tub of meths and a bit of a shake?

I actually have a waxed chain I purchased from Wattshop to try and re-wax first, that has gone seriously “dry” on the turbo. I’m guessing with that, I just need to give it a wipe and straight in the slow cooker? The others, off my other bikes, will take more time as they were all traditionally lubricated

I’ve used meths in an old plastic milk bottle for a two minute shake

Yeah. Give your Wattshop chain a wipe and drop it in the cooker

Meths in the ultrasonic cleaner.
Get that mask on and the window open.

For the already waxed chain, just whack it back in the slow cooker after giving it a wipe.

I’ve got a Jar with Meths in which I just pop chain into

Jar with petrol for me. A potent solvent and dries quick. Lives in the shed with no sources of ignition so safe enough.

I use petrol too. Just take some from the can I use for the strimmer.

I waxed a new chain 2 weeks ago for the first time. It seems to have worked well though it’s making a bit of a mess on the turbo. I must hoover up! I decided to leave out the PTFE powder I got because I don’t want that nasty stuff in the house and my TT bike lives on the turbo until there are ever any races. Next time I plan to do two chains so I can alternate. Quite fun

Yes @stenard just beware when you put the chain on your turbo bike - you will get wax all over the nursery carpet…
