Bike Cleaning

Anyone got a decent recommendation for a sonic cleaner on Amazon?

Ultra sonic cleaner

Or failing that try running a boiled kettle over it a few times then re wax

Depends on how long you’ve left that rust develop I guess

Apologies not Amazon but I bought this from eBay last year.

I’ve put my chains with hot boiling water through it and a few cassettes with degreaser. Does the job. Nothing fancy about it

Thanks, still available so looks like I’ll be on the waxed chains soon too. :+1:

I waxed my chains a couple of months ago now. All going fine. Not done a huge amount of miles, but I’m wondering should I wait until I can hear they need re-waxing or should I be pro-active about it?

I guess I’m concerned that I set off on a long ride and then notice a noisy chain at the beginning of the ride and have to complete the rest of the ride, will that do much damage?

To your sanity? Yes.
To your bike? Not so much.

Can you burn the wax? Bought a bag of the Molten Speedwax and put it in the slow cooker, not realising that high went up to 175C and proceeded to forget about it.

I let it set and it has set as per the picture below. I haven’t put any chains innit yet but seeing it was almost twice the recommended temperature, is there anything that can burn off in there?

Is that what it normally looks like?

The MSW I currently have in my cooker is darker in colour.

Clears up once warm though.

Can’t see you will have done too much to it. Must have been bubbling away a treat

It certainly was, tried to stir it with a piece of cardboard and it sizzles like a bit of bacon.

Ive got a worn chain on the bike that I’m waiting on a Wiggle restock to replace and I cleaned it with the ultrasonic cleaner the other day which seemed to go very well (no oily streaks after a couple of runs and bath in turps) so I’ll go through that process again a couple.of times after todays wet ride and then experiment with that. If it stays relatively quiet, then it’s should hopefully be ok for the new chain

Used my bike in the rain a couple of weeks ago. Put it in the garage with dehumidifer on but didn’t make any effort to dry it :face_with_hand_over_mouth:, When I got it out today the waxed chain was pretty rusty (I’ve probably ridden 150km since waxing).

I rmembered a few other people had this issue (quick search threw up @Poet @Adam @Doonhamer), before putting it in the wax pot is there anything I should do?

Yep.

Clean it with hot boiling water or hot water in an ultra sonic cleaner

I had this. Cleaned it up with hot water, scrubbed it down with something abrasive and waxed it again. Looked good after.

Yeah.
Wax and wet riding don’t mix.

Far too much faffing around for my liking.
Chain goes rusty real quick.

105 group set - just replace every 3 years (or flog the bike and get a new one)

I use Putoline wax (Its meant for Motox chains I believe) and never really had any rust issues. I also wait until the wax thickens slightly by turning off the heating device before removing the chain. My theory being you can get more wax stuck in were you need it rather than it all running out.

Yeah, I tried that but then forgot about it. Came back an hour later to find a pan of solid wax with the chain somewhere at the bottom…

Haha, your post totally just reminded me I started to warm the wax up an hour ago

Having given it a wash and a bit of a scrub in hot water, decided to use the ultra sonic cleaner, I was amazed how much extra dirt that got out.

When I originally waxed the chains I dried in the oven after the initial wash before putting in the wax. This time I just put straight in, the wax is proper bubbling away, which I assume is the reaction to the water.

With it being so hot atm is the wax just going to drip off my chain? :joy:

Sorry if this has been asked before.

What about cassette and chainrings. Do they need waxing too, or just a good clean?

Appreciate this may be the most stupid question ever :man_facepalming:

No waxing, just a good clean.

Thanks given it a brush and a rub down with white spirit.

So, no oil at all now? Just wax right?

Got to say this is the most fun I have had in ages, and the shed smells great
