Exactly, just wax.
If for whatever reason you need to relubricate and can’t hot wax (maybe very long ride or other) then use a wax lubricant such as Squirt.
What’s going on with the teeth on the big cog?
Looks like there’s one missing?
and the next two down as well!
I thought there was something funny looking with it.
Oh, yeah!
It’s SRAM Red, so maybe some fancy shifting things onto the big rings???
I think it’s meant to be like that, it always has been. But am really not very technically minded as you may have noticed.
Puzzlingly when cleaning the chain I notice the cassette is SRAM but the chain is Dura ace, I don’t remember deliberately mixing them up. Maybe changed chain once and got it wrong?? Seems to work ok
Most chains are compatible speed for speed and Dura Ace are about as good a chain you can buy.
That’s good to know. I got it second hand and knowing the original owner doubt they would have done it by mistake
Kind of half melted at the moment.
This is a good reminder.
Need to do the chain on my TT - proper rattle to it now
Just like breaking bad
Going to take it for a little spin to see if it still works
Got to say, as bike fettling goes this was particularly fun. Also how great not to get oily hands putting the chain back on. Think I might be converted
Eh? You have access to a near limitless supply of latex gloves, why do you not don a pair of those to play with the chain?
I always carry a pair in my spares kit, plus loads in the basement
I’m not going to sleep well tonight
But yeah, probably should wear gloves more
I find my gears can be ever so slightly more reluctant to change immediately after waxing the chain.
I guess it reduces the side flex slightly but it soon settles back to normal so have to resist the temptation to fiddle with the adjusters.
Just back from a little spin, seemed to ride ok, certainly no worse than before. Looks shiny
I had failed shifts and ghost shifting today. Had to go two up and one back before the chain settled. Need to figure out if it’s just indexing or if something is wearing out.
Is now a good time to state that I haven’t changed the cassette on my roadie since I got it 6000+km ago?
Rained yesterday, waxed chain.
Nightmare today.
I really do think that waxing is not intended for UK winters.
I don’t use the clear parafin wax so can’t say if that could be an issue as I use the motox stuff which doesn’t seem to go as hard. But advice I have followed from the MTBers is only remove the chain from the wax once it has slightly skinned over, ie slightly thickened. This tends to mean more stays ‘inside’ the chain. Seems to work for me on manky wet gravel rides. Personally I’d move over to the Putoline wax but
I have given up on waxing after around 18 months or so of trying it, the noise after not too many miles just does my head in, much prefer the silence of a normally lubed drivechain
I am planning on using putoline on winter bike. It needs a service and new cassette, so once that is done I will give it a try.
Yup. I often ride with music so don’t notice it as much, but it was very noisy at both IMUK and Outlaw, with a totally new, freshly waxed chain.
The people I ride with also wax, so club runs and social rides can be noisy! But that’s only when I’m not being deafened by the sound of whirring freehubs from the wheelsuckers
