Bike Cleaning

Agree. This is the only reason I bother. And only on my road bikes. Doesn’t work in the wet.

I’m just using two jars of mineral spirits to strip my chains. Long baths because I tend to forget them. Then a hose down with isopropyl alcohol from a spray can. Easy peesy.

In Mallorca my waxed chain got noisy so I switched to Silca synergetic that I had with me. I was impressed… really quiet and still fairly clean with a wipe down if the chain with a rag post ride.

Yup. Like what @doka says.
It’s every ride in the wet.

Not sure it extends the life of anything though :person_shrugging:t3:

The squeaking when it all falls off does my nut in.
I’m usually about 50km from home too :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

@Poet is gonna hate me (if he actually bought some Putoline…) I’ve now taken delivery of some of this. Initially read about it on an MTB forum so hoping for decent wet weather results. It also smells lovely.

Main reason being I wanted something which I could actually use with a drip on for TCR. Top bloke too, I explained my situation and he’s still working on and improving the drip on formula but sent me some of that and a wet weather more focused one too FOC.

Nice I’ve been using MSW but it’s a pain to get - I’ll give this a shot :facepunch:t2:

£44 for a pre-waxed 105 chain sounds reasonable too. Saves the initial faff of degreasing for the first wax. I mean, it’s double the price of the standalone chain but £20 for the faff saving…

What’s your reasons for choosing this over Silca that’s tested to be the best against the competition?

Goes back to the Blackpool thread :person_facepalming:t4:

Not saying I’ve done it, but the time it takes is disproportionate to the cost of someone else doing it…

Anyway, on a no unnecessary purchase month to build a nice little spending pot for holiday. On you go.

Initially it was because the guy was posting and responding knowledgeably to questions on the MTB forum and wasn’t giving it the big sell at all. Then he was very quick and happy to respond to my questions. He’s clearly done a ton of research.

Its also half the price of Silca. I don’t know how much his drip on will be when released but I’d bet it’ll be cheaper!

I found the Putoline too messy on it’s own so I had been mixing it roughly 50/50 with paraffin wax which seemed to reach a happy balance.

Anyway, I was due to start a new batch but my stash of paraffin wax was low so I ordered some of the GLF.

It comes in a box of 8 blocks each weighing approx 70g & you get a wee chain holder thingy for when it’s cooking. As @Sowler mentioned it smells much nicer which is a big +ve. I obviously can’t comment on it’s longevity, but I’ve had a short turbo with it & noticed it was a bit flakier than my Putoline mixture, more like a pure wax.

Early days, but nothing to complain about.

I want to make an effort to clean and prep a chain, been skimming through this but really CBA with a pot and hot wax. I have got some degreaser though and will try it on an older chain & cassette first.

I’m looking at the drip lube which I’m hoping will be a bit less faff for some of the gains\protection? Fairly sure one of the local testers uses something like that rather than waxing.

Looks like Silca is decent?

Also need to clean my disc brakes as they were squealing before the soaking a few days ago, looks like specific product for that, I presume it’s just a case of elbow grease on top? And trying to clean the pads?

The Silca non wax drip lube is good & probably your best non wax option.

It’s tough to stop discs squealing in the wet but if your going to put anything on then brake cleaner would be it, should be cheap enough from a motor factors.

Gently sand them with some 120+ grit paper.
Just enough to scuff up the surface.
Recentre them, too.

I think @Sowler got some prototype wax from
Someone and says it’s good?

The pads or the discs?

What I’ve read is cleaning fluid for the discs

Just spotted a hot pot in Asda for £25 but I’ve got enough stuff as it is. Fancy the sonic thing as well but know I’ll probably use them once, if that

Aldi or Lidl had the sonic cleaners in.
I sanded the pads and discs :white_check_mark:

Works well, braking feels “cleaner” (less grabby) and no squeaking :baguette_bread::fr:🕵🏻‍♂

I bought a pack of the wax Sowler recommended - seems good enough so far, no complaints

Me too.

While I was away over summer I used Squirt lube after rides. I’m sure the Silva stuff is good, but :hand_with_index_finger_and_thumb_crossed::hand_with_index_finger_and_thumb_crossed:.

On disc brake cleaning/squealing/general poor performance, the first port of call should be cleaning them with some IPA, you can use meths at a push but you’ll get better results with the IPA. Its nearly always sorted my braking issues.

IPA from eBay

On the drip on wax, I don’t think he’s released the stuff yet.

@Doonhamer I agree Putoline is quite messy but I do think it does works well and lasts longer for wetter winter rides. But I much prefer the GLF stuff overall.

You can get Crockpot slow cookers brand new on ebay for £16 posted.

Ah!!

I used Brewdog Punk IPA. And wondered why it didn’t work :joy::joy::joy:

I now see the error of my ways :face_with_peeking_eye::wink:
