Bike Cleaning

At least your chain is now carbon neutral

Well, my rotors :joy::joy::joy:

Thanks, will try and get some IPA, did try and get some disc rotor cleaner last night but they had none but I guess it’s probably not the same stuff.

Can I just use acetone to clean rotors? Or is proper cleaner better?

I get squeal but only when I’m coming to a full stop.

Pure acetone maybe ok. Nail varnish remover no, as it probably contains an oil. For £5 on ebay I’d just order the IPA.

TBH - I setup my bike on Zwift yesterday and it’s likely to stay there a while now. Don’t need brakes on Zwift…

Just about finished the cleaning and lubing, what a f*** on, think I’ll just buy a new bike next time :joy:

I’ve put the Silca stuff on the chain (and garage floor ) and will see how it rides tomorrow, but might take it with me to coat it again next week.

Rear brake is still squealing when I brake hard but I’ll see how that goes tomorrow and if it beds in a bit during a ride. Had to bleed the rear again a little bit.

Almost proud of myself!

Hmm, left an old chain in IPA overnight and it had some orange rust colour stuff on it? A lot of it appears to have rubbed off though. It’s only an old one so I might just put some GT85 on it.

I wouldn’t worry at all. I had similar on an old chain, as long as the links move freely after cleaning and freeing up, it’ll likely rub off in use, unless your bothered about looks.

just found out you don’t need a slow cooker over here

this is a candle we left out by mistake last night… it’s now 11am and the wax has completely melted.

Still only 38c? :joy:

spot on!

although don’t know the melting point of wax, it’s probably hotter on a black table in the sun trap that is our garden

in other news, the Bougainville are finally happy. They were pretty much dead a month ago. They like bigger pots and lots of water here it seems.

I’m testing the knee out with the first tri club Doha race of the season at 4pm today - another 1.7km /400m /1.7km /400m /1.7km aquathlon - should be nice and warm still :fire:. Unfortunately I’m not going to be fast as have hardly run all summer. Should be ok in the drink mind:crossed_fingers:

That suggests wax it not going to fair too well on the chain either.

aah… that’s a good point! hadn’t considered that

cracking race we just had mind. Found myself head to head with a young stud. he was the better runner but I caught and passed him each swim. in the end it came down to a sprint finish in the final 200m, which was on a floodlit running track with the spectators cheering… nowhere to hide :see_no_evil:

it was obvious he was going to pull away , and he did, but I still really enjoyed the element of (young) man on (old) man combat. 29m 35s, pleased with that. The swims were only 250m though, not 400 like I thought.

1st run felt ok but I was properly melting on the 2nd

@Doonhamer sadly no, I don’t even have a Tri suit here at the mo so just wore a pair of jammers & then threw on a t shirt, cost me precious seconds that did :disappointed:

Did you let him know that you’ve been injured, so you’d have ‘ad’ im otherwise.

haha no he didn’t have much English. I said well done at the end and apologised for almost taking out his teeth with my head in a badly executed tumble-turn-overtake combo.

I was listening to the latest Escape Collective podcast & they mentioned an online calculator that has compiled data from Adam Kerin of Zero Friction Cycling to give you an idea of how long your drivetrain can last if you use different lube methods.

Unsurprisingly a big difference between using a quality wax & Muc-Off lube.
